William Barnes was a high 4* recruit. He was ranked as high as the #2 OG in the country. Ed Montilus was his friend and teammate at Apopka HIgh in FL. Montilus was a run of the mill 3* recruit. He had some very nice offers (Miami, Florida, Auburn), but I am not certain if they all were commitable offers. And I recall people on the internet speculating that the only reason Montilus received many of the P5 offers he had was to try to land Barnes.

Barnes may develop into a star on the OL, but before that happens, Ed Montilus is going to start for UNC.

Some guys develop later than most others. Some guys even peak in high school. Some guys just outwork most others to keep getting better.

Offensive line might be the hardest position group to predict in recruiting. I’d love to see an analysis that compares high school ratings to NFL success by position group.

Kap recruited well while at UNC but we never seemed to develop enough depth. That includes a weird pattern of guys quitting football for one reason or another. We’re probably a couple years away from true depth up front but it’s cool that we could have two multi-year starters from the same high school. There will be at least two spots open next season and I expect Barnes to grab one.

You need continuity on the OL and as RSF, both may prove to be anchors on our OL for 3-4 years. Let’s hope so. Both are massive human beings.

Next year, we are going to miss the leadership of Polino on the OL, as well as Heck, who rather quietly has become a very good OT. But we do have a number of young guys with very good potential.

I hope that this year a number of them get PT so they enter next year past the green stage.
