I've been following College Basketball for 50 years but what was once the most competitive sport around (after UCLA's run) has become something else all together. Kentucky now pulls in the top 5-6 recruits every year ( in the past they would be split over 5-6 teams) and fields a semi pro team that it's tough to compete with. The tournament is now them against the world and the only fun is watching them lose to veteran teams like Connecticut and Wisconsin (poor Wisconsin then loses to another one and done team in Duke). Players like Michael Jordan had a connection to their school that carried on to the pros (how many of us became Bulls fans when he went to Chicago?). When you think of Duke do you think J.J. Reddick or Jayson Parker? Sorry for the long vent but for the first time ever I'm losing interest in the sport but a UNC run this year might change all that.

College bball is the best sport by far! It has always been cyclical and this latest trend will soon pass. Either the NCAA will change its policies or a few high profile recruits will decide to put the money on pause and enjoy the experience or teams of OADs will lose to experienced "lesser" teams. I see a team with not a single OAD at #1 and I saw the semi-pro team go down last year. I see the supposed cream of the crop teams struggling this year against supposedly inferior teams. If UK or puke or other "powers" lose a few unexpected games, the coaches themselves will change their practices to protect their jobs/legacies!

BTW: what are you going to do....watch the NBA, lol!

I agree with the OP's sentiments. College basketball needs to go the way of baseball. Either go pro out of High School or it's 3 years in college. That simple. No doubt, Coach Smith retired a few years early because he didn't like where the game was headed.

Yeah because college basketball television ratings and revenue stream haven't been at an all-time high the last 5 years.....

We are now a football school. A lot less corruption and handlers in CFB.

OP, I hear you. BUT, I'm willing to bet you if we were pulling in the 5-6 top recruits every year and going to the FF every year, this thread would not even exist. IJS....

These posts sound like they're made by bandwagon fans.

Waahhh.. I hate cbb now... that is, unless we win.

Damn OP. Don't jump.

Kentucky is playing within the rules of taking kids and having a number of them leave after a year. It's a different model than what is "old school", but it's not the 80's anymore. College basketball changes over time, plenty of examples. Ratings are high and you have a group that always wants the little guy to slay Goliath. We have been and will have our shot at being Goliath again. That's what makes it great. I hate some of the things that CBB has become, but it is what it is. I think kids should be able to jump straight from HS, but I don't think forcing them to stay 3 years if they don't is the best model. I would rather the NBA and NCAA come up with a program that is player focused. Have kids be able to get evaluated and get feedback on their game. I posted a detailed program before, but basically the Top 100 kids regardless of age are sent to a week long camp in the summer where NBA GM's and scouts can watch them play. Each kid will get a detailed report provided to them based on all the NBA GM's opinions of their game and the analytics will rank them on where they would be projected to go in the draft based on the scores. At that point the kid has something they can use for a decision vs. just a gut feel or agents over inflating them to get paid. A kid can go as a rising HS Sophmore up through College Senior, so it's apples to apples.

I would also say the NCAA could help by allowing scholarship exemptions that would allow a kid one "do over" who declared for the draft and didn't get drafted. He can come back one time and if the school has already used all of the scholarships thinking they won't be coming back, they could go over the max of 13 to have 14.

I couldn't agree with you more Coach. I think fans from all schools would like to see players stick around for 2-3 years at least. But, I don't think it's right to tell a kid he can enter the army but he can't go to the league for a couple more years. It's obvious you have done your homework and come up with a fair plan to the young player & school. I have total respect for your post sir.

The reason I like this year's UNC team is the players have been while and we have seen them develop over the years. I don't want 5 one and dones every year. Maybe UK and Duke fans like that crap, I do not. They should make the same rule as baseball, either come to college for 3 years or go directly to the pros. The game is corrupt with the AAU system. We all know why UK is getting all those players, eventually the NCAA will figure it out.

The NBA sucks because its owners are short sightedly greedy and its players are stupid about almost everything, which means the lawyers for their union are blood thirsty sharks who care for nothing but extra millions in fees ASAP. The result is that the NBA harms itself long term by drafting HS kids and then 1 and dones.

And that sets up a place for a master slimeball like Calipari.

I don't agree with much of the OP but I do agree with the part I've quoted. It's definitely not like that anymore. And that's a shame. Even with the guys that stay more than one year, you can tell they have one foot out the door. Sure guys used to leave early 20 years ago. But when they were there, they were a part of the school. Stackhouse and Sheed both left after their soph years. But they were invested. You can tell that by how often they come back and how often they act as an advocate for the program. I'm sure Irving loves duke. But how much of a spokesman can he be having played in only 8(?) games and being on campus for all of 8 months? Anthony Davis probably loves UK. And he absolutely made an impact on the college basketball landscape, but how much of an impact did he make on campus?

It's just weird...and sad. I used to love to watch how a player evolved throughout his years. Not only as a ball player, but as a member of the school community. We're all being robbed of that these days. Too bad.

As long as Kentucky and Duke are winning with their 1-and-done strategy their fans will not complain. There will be a big drop-off for the Heels after this year without someone like Paige to take over a game. There will be no changes in the rules until the next collective bargaining agreement several years from now. Our best bet for immediate changes is Calipari excepting an NBA deal. Rumors going around that Sacramento will offer him 15-20 million year with part-ownership with a quarantee that he would never be fired. Hope this is true and he takes it.

I laughed also when I heard this on CBS radio this morning. Probably not true. But betcha most rival fans would like him to go to the NBA or somewhere outside of college basketball. We can complain all we want, but the man get whoever he wants for the most part and all our fans can do is complain and watch it. Hate the man, but he is cleaning everyone's clock except Duke.

$15/20/mill a year? that is BEYOOOND absurd for any coach anywhere.

I guess I can believe the $15-$20 million part of it. Hey, Cal is rolling and I'm sure some idiot owner would pay him that. But there is no way, no how that anyone is ever getting a clause written into the contract where they couldn't be fired. That's the absurd part.

In regards to the rumor offering, see my post above. But can we please stop acting like Cal is winning national championships every year? The man has 1. Uno. If Cal is getting a deal where he can get $15-$20 million and never get fired, I guess that means K can get one of about $50 million per year, never get fired and the owner gives him blowjobs every afternoon before he leaves his office.

Cal and UK are signing great talent every year. But he's not dominating the college basketball landscape in a similar fashion. In fact, his recruiting prowess means shit on the NBA level. And the fact that he's not dominating college basketball despite dominating recruiting would tell me that he sure is hell isn't worth $15-$20 million per year and having a "no termination" clause written into his contract.

And BTW, I don't hate the man. If I hated anyone it would be K. But I don't hate him either. I'm perfectly fine with our program being what it is. I acknowledge that some of our fans need to win more than we have the last few years. But I don't. I get what I need from our program. If we win more, great. Frankly, we're a football school now anyway. :D

Yeah i guess i just find it insane. The top paid coaches now are pop and doc- $11M & $10M respectively. Cal getting that sort of coin and those perks to me is just asinine.

Especially when he's proved nothing at the NBA level and not all that much on the college level.

College football TV ratings say hello. College hoops isn't even close in popularity to college football. And make no mistake; football is where the big bucks are now...firmly in stone.

CFB is the best reg. season sport there is, hands down. I love hoops, but unless the Heels are a participant, or Dook might lose w/ 3 min. to play, I can't watch a full game anymore. CBB has become basically unwatchable if you don't have a rooting interest.
