You've probably heard the scuttlebutt about a couple of signs that ESPN aired during last Saturday's edition of Gameday. The signs have become a big part of the show and ESPN even has a part of their website dedicated to the more clever ones each week. But the two questionable signs that made it on air this past Saturday are below.
Here's the first one:
How do y'all feel about this? Just a part of college football or over the top and inappropriate? Personally, I don't think I really have a problem with the sign but I understand the backlash that ESPN has received by airing it. Calling a university's female students whores can damage relationships that ESPN needs. We all know how much ESPN loves the SEC. If one of their institutions wanted to make a big deal about this, it could get ugly.
Here's the second one that has angered some people:
It's a clear shot at Urban Meyer but personally, I think it's pretty damn funny. But Meyer's wife and daughter went berzerker on twitter and we're offended and mad as hell about the sign and ESPN tweeting it. Maybe it's my disdain for Meyer that doesn't allow me to be sympathetic to this situation. I don't know.
But here's the deal, this part of the show is adored by many college football fans. So doing away with it would hurt their show - which is one of the greatest shows in sports TV history. But if they continue to promote these signs, we're only going to see more and more inappropriate signs. Because that's what we as Americans do - everything to the extreme. ESPN might start being a little more censoring of what they air. But then what will they have?...a bunch of ordinary, non-creative, average signs? How will that resonate with viewers?
Thoughts?
