CHARLOTTE - UNC football coach Larry Fedora was not at all pleased with a call the officials made determining one of his players was offisides on what was a successful onside kick with 1:09 left in Saturday's ACC championship game.
The Tar Heels recovered the kick, and trailing by 8 points and with an offense that was humming in the final quarter, Carolina at least had a decent chance at scoring a touchdown and possibly sending the game into overtime.
The call, which is not reviewable, lingered with the coach, who surprisingly said what he did in the postgame press conference.
"I had a chance to look at it, and they missed it, he said. "They were wrong. That's all I'm going to say about it. They were wrong."
Fedora acknowledged nothing was guaranteed, but he felt like his team deserved and earned the chance to try to tie the game, which ended in a 45-37 Clemson victory.
"I don't know if we would have gone down and scored, but it was like a minute and eight seconds left on the clock and we should have had the ball at about midfield, and the way we had moved it the last couple series I would have felt pretty good about that," he said.
