Canada completely out-coached and out-played our more talented guys.
First USA loss at any age group since 2011.

Good job Calapari, who refused to address the media after the game.

UK fans are realizing that while he's a great salesman...

Kal is maybe the best in the college game in selling his program to recruits, he is as well very good at keeping his players from negative headlines while playing for him. Granted, for sure recruiting is a huge aspect of how successful a coach will be and Kal gets the best of the available talent nearly every recruiting year.

But when you get that extreme talent every year, when it is a surprise when you finish behind as few as 2 other programs in recruiting in a year, then wining is not only expected, it should be the key to multiple national championships. With the level of talent rolling thru that program you would expect to see something nearing UCLA under Wooden, UConn ladies under Geno, Bama under Bear, at least Bama with Saben. What rather we see is a program that is pre-season top 3 every year and fails to live up to that billing. IN other words we see a coach not able to structure a team that should win it all to actually do that consistently.

Problem with this U19 team and Kal, Kal is given the talent but can't dominate some teams by such a severe talent advantage because his teams have to play teams with the most talented kids other countries have. The old adage of a great coach can beat you with his own players and then trade off and beat you with yours just doesn't apply to Kal . Truth is IMO, if kal were to go out for some reason during the season his teams would not really miss him from the aspect of a coach. That compared to K for example, going out last season and duke takes a down turn and it is corrected as soon as he is back on the side lines, as much as I hate K I can easy admit the guy is a heck of a coach and is a difference maker by being on the side lines, I can not say the same of Kalipari.

Knight Lite grossly underachieved last year. He had 3 first round draft picks, the first pick of the second round, and the preseason ACC POY on his team. With all that mega talent on his roster, he finished tied for 5th in the regular season. Then to top it off, he couldn't lead his team past the first weekend of the NCAAT!

Yeah, that was one of the best coaching jobs I've ever seen.

C'mon Kellen, I know you've seen this. Quote it on DI, I'm sure your fellow dermites would enjoy it. Would love to see the spin doctors rationalize the LOM's "amazing" performance.

Great point Mark. I knew it had been a while but didn't realize it had been that long. And he's had the most talent almost every year, if not every single year. His teams haven't been good defensively for several years, something his teams used to be known for. And they have lived and died by the three pointer for several years now too. He's forgotten what made him one of the all time great college basketball coaches.

I think Cal's unprecedented success on the recruiting trail galled Knight Lite, much like it galled Bonds to see McGuire and Sosa getting all the headlines for their home run derbies, knowing he was the better player. So much like Bonds, the LOM decided to go all in on the OAD recruiting tactic. And it has backfired on him.

Personally, I think he is in serious decline.

Here Kellen, Kellen.

Even better, Since Roy has returned, the Heels lead dook 8-3 in regular season titles, and 3-2 in Natty's.

I think ratty's failure to emphasize D coincides with the need to cater to the whims of OAD types! As soon as you start coaching them hard to do the less glamorous stuff you start to get the dreaded "system" coach label! Peeps start saying you are not changing with the times and that you don't relate well to modern youth.......wait a minute, does this sound familiar to anyone?

You can spin it however you want in regard to coaching abilities and pedigrees. Possibly the biggest story from this game is that RJ Barrett is most definitely a bad dude.

This is actually a really solid comparison.

I think that his emphasis on the three point shot has something to do with the defensive downturn also. So many of his shooters are not very good defensively. When J.J. Redick was playing his defensive shortcomings could be compensated for by surrounding him with a lot of good defensive players who were also decent offensively. But when a kid comes into town known as a hot three point shooter that is seldom accompanied by a reputation as a lock down defender. When a team is loaded with such phenoms the offense can be lights out, but if the defense is not up to snuff, one off game can end a tournament run in a hurry. That will win a lot of games though.

I think Glenn is spot on. The reliance on the three pointer can win a ton of games for you but if you play mediocre defense, one off shooting night in a single elimination tournament can spell an early exit, something the LOM's teams have experienced pretty often in recent years. The losses to Lehigh and Mercer are two of the biggest upsets in tournament history and I love it.
