Field Turf going in....

Anybody know the stated reasons for going to the turf? Cost? Long-term upkeep? Same as practice facility? Just wondering.

Most of you are too young to have ever played on the original style Astro Turf. I did, when it was new and hip, the wave of the future. And I hated it worse than anything. It felt unnatural to run on, and it was as hard as a frozen under a layer of ice. And the turf burns were common and worse than terribly painful - they could slow your movements down.

The field turf is much better in every way. But it aint grass. There is no problem growing first rate grass in Kenan.

Supposedly Mack wanted it because it plays fast. He had it installed at Texas when he was there.

That's what 'they' said about AstroTurf as well. The Sooners, for example, played fast on their AstroTurf because they were fast. All those super fast Miami teams played on grass.

AstroTurf did play truly fast in one unnatural way: the field was raised up in the middle (about the area of the NFL hash marks) and sloped downward to the sidelines. The reason was for water drainage. But guys who started running on the high part and heading toward a lower level had an advantage over guys going the opposite way. It was very small, but some people swore it a necessary part of their team speed.

maintenance was one thing, the other was having a consistent surface for both play and practice regardless of weather, regardless of time of yr, etc. The indoor practice and outdoor practice are both this turf, now kenan will have this turf, so for home games, regardless of weather, the kids know exactly what to expect. That seems like it could be a slight home-field advantage. Not sure how it effects away games if you wind up on a wet, frozen or nasty field.

They say the new stuff might be better regarding injuries. So if we can cut down on practice and home injuries, then i say do it.

Consistent surface wasn't an issue. The new practice facility has grass and turf.

It is a sound argument for a spread offense though. If you get matched up against a power running team on a wet sloppy field, then you probably take a beating. The grass was always great in Kenan, and I hate this decision, but I think the playing surface will be more consistent in different types of weather, even if that wasn't part of Mack's reasoning.

A practice facility should still have both, even if you play on turf at home. You need to be able to practice on grass for the away weeks when you're going to be playing on it.

People have to realize the advancement in technology and testing has came a long way. This is not the 80's its 2019 Mack Brown knows what he's doing. Don't believe the he or the school would put these players at risk of injury.
