"If the phone rang and Dean Smith was on the other line, Charlie Scott began fretting.

“I’m 60-some years old, and up until the point he died, if he called, I would worry about what did I do wrong that day,” Scott recalled last month at his induction into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

“This was that parent that you always wanted to feel good about you, and you didn’t want to disappoint him. You didn’t want to disappoint Dean Smith.”
