First Chapel Hill Visit

I'll be at that one too. I usually only get to go to one or two a year. I'm pretty pumped about it, def check out the museum and everything up and down Franklin St.

The museum is free and is open before the game. Plan on at least 1 hour to look around the museum - it is attached to the Smith Center. DO NOT under estimate how long it takes to park and walk to the stadium or to do the park and ride. If you drive your car (assuming you don't have parking pass) then I usually park across from the hospital. Its a good little walk so wear good walking shoes. We left our hotel on 15/501 near I 40 around 4:30, grabbed a very quick bite (30 minute stop) and it took us about 1 1/2 hr to drive the couple miles to the parking lot, park, and then walk to the stadium. Keeping in mid all of the students were not on campus. It will be worse when you come in January. There is a reason that the stadium looks 1/2 empty at tip off - it takes that long to get into your seat from where you park. Have fun and enjoy your trip.

After many years, we opted for the park & ride bus from the Mall, getting out of Bowles lot was always a nightmare. Easier to get out of Craig Deck if on the top level, get there early and back in, easier to get out...but then back to park & ride, a good deal as while some sit in traffic after the game your bus is whisking away toward the Mall. After the game pay attention to the que regarding buses as they are labled as to which lots they go to...
Hit the museum, so many great places to eat too...

Top of the Hill is the most fun bar spot on Franklin. You should definitely check it out. For food go to Sunrise Biscuit, Merritt's Store & Grill, Carolina Ale House, etc. If you want nice food I'd give different recommendations, but those are the fun, cheap places. Definitely walk through campus and down Franklin St, and you could check out Carrboro too.

I know you're visiting Chapel Thrill but honestly, downtown Durham (15 minutes from downtown CH) has some of the the best and most laid back restaurants in the Triangle ... Tobacco Road, Tylers Taproom, Parker & Otis, Dos Perros, etc etc. It's hard to beat the American Tobacco Campus at night ... great food, spirits and views. And free parking!

Agree about the museum visit, it's a MUST. And I also recommend taking the Tar Heel express (link below) to the game ... door to door service for cheap. But plan to pick up the Express at least 75 minutes before tip off. Knowing what I know, I would go back over and visit the basketball museum on Friday or Saturday, instead of trying to cram it in before the game. Plus, if you do that on Friday there is a good chance you can slip into the Dean Dome (thru the main doors up front) and see the place empty --- very very cool.

You can also visit Dean's grave, it's in the old Chapel Hill cemetery across from Carmichael.

I have fond memories of "Fluid Dynamics" lectures by Dr. Parker Reist/Aerosol Scientist at the UNC School of Public Health at 5 PM on Fridays at "He's Not Here," a small funky bar near the corner of Columbia and Franklin in Chapel Hill. He socialized with the grad students and enjoyed his beer and life.

The cemetery is a must, especially Dean Smith's grave, and also Jane Gilbert's, whose tombstone reads, "I was a Tar Heel born and a Tar Heel bred/and here I lie a Tar Heel dead.”

I am staying in a chapel Hill, about 3 miles from Dean Dome, we are staying at Chapel Hill University Inn, that seems like it would probably be best to park there and just walk to stadium

Chapel Hill University Inn is 3 miles from campus, so I would probably Uber. You could also drive yourself and park on campus.

Be SUPER CAREFUL parking on campus during business hours, the traffic violation hawks are vicious and show no mercy! Pay close attention to the signs and make sure your meter is fully stocked!

What "nice food" recommendations would you make?

I mean it's great what they've done with the Tobacco Campus and all, but did you really just recommend that he spend his FIRST VISIT to Chapel Hill in Durham? o_O

Thinking maybe you need a little timeout from posting for that one. Mods? ;)
