What is everyone cooking for that first game?

I do believe that I will be taking that Thursday and Friday off of work. I think that I am going to smoke a very large batch of ribs, do some grilled blue cheese and bacon potato salad and some peanut coleslaw!

GO HEELS!!!

Tim

If I cant make it to the game, I'll probably end up making myself a Ribeye at home with some Crown or Johnny Walker Black label to wash it down.

Since it's in my back yard I'm probably not going to a lot of effort. It's also going to be hot as blazes, so the idea of working over a hot grill isn't too appealing. Like THN, I'm probably going to find a nearby watering hole.

Raising. Is there any good sports bars. Within walking distance to the stadium? And with good food.

Define "good food" lol. Yes, it's a big city so there are tons of options. One of the things I love about Charlotte is that uptown is entirely walkable.

I created a Google Maps listing of good sports bars near the stadium prior to the Belk Bowl. I'm sure it's outdated by now, so maybe I'll update it for the USCjr game. A few off the top of my head:

Draught (601 S Cedar St): draughtcharlotte.com
Valhalla Pub & Eatery (317 S Church St): valhallapub.com
Mellow Mushroom (225 West MLK Jr Blvd): mellowmushroom.com
Carolina Ale House (201 S College St): carolinaalehouse.com

The Irish Pubs (all within a block of each other, which is hilarious):
Connolly's On Fifth (115 E 5th St): connollysirishpub.com
Ri Ra Irish Pub (208 N Tryon St): rira.com
Fitzgerald's Irish Pub (201 E 5th St): fitzgeraldscharlotte.com

Then there's the Epicentre (corner of Trade St and College St) which has another handful of options like Whisky River, BlackFinn, Wild Wing Café, etc.: epicentrenc.com

Thanks. I have been to the area with Whiskey River. I went there that night after the Belk Bowl. But that was the first time I had been in Charolette

The Epicentre is a good place to visit your first time to Charlotte for a game. Lots of activity going on there and plenty of places to eat and hang out.

I like Valhalla because it's a hole in the wall, and Draught because it's off the beaten path. Of course any Irish pub is always good, too. All of these places will probably be crowded on game day. The early kickoff time will probably prevent things from getting too wild, though. But if we win, I might be taking a cab home.

I was thinking about taking a cab to the game from the hotel. Because it's probally pure hell to get out of a parking garage.

Absolutely right. Leave your car at the hotel and take a cab. Depending on where your hotel is, you might be able to walk to the game. They'll also have pedicabs running to and from the game.

Tim, sorry to derail your thread. I'd like to hear about others' tailgating setups since I'm an amateur myself.

How do people even become tailgating masters, anyway? Is it passed down through generations, or is it more trial and error?

Just get yourself a Coleman gas grill. However you should buy a blue one- only cheapskates and Moo fans buy the red model.

No worries.....i was just hoping to see what others were cooking.....I'm having some buddies over and we will all drink beer, but I will promise that anything from my grill will be magnitudes better than any sports bar grub.

My tailgaiting style comes from what I grew up with. My dad has had me help out with BBQ and cooking since I was a little kid. My only suggestion to anyone who is new to tailgaiting is to develop your tailgate menu and setup to your personality. I have friends who love seafood.....theirs is usually shrimp and fish......some do steaks, brats.....whatever you think matches best to the event. That is my 2 cents anyway.

GO HEELS

Yea, as UNC71 said, don't be those guys! :) They are much like the mayhem guy in the ads...

As to tailgating, it is a mix and match, whatever your crowd would like, easy cleanup is important...I remember a guy years ago in the Bell Tower lot, he would pull his little smoker in and park and once his crowd was fed he would offer those in nearby spots some of his pig, always really good...then the rules for the lot changed and he was not allowed to bring it in any longer. :(

And I do like the terrapins '71, reminds me of Terrapin Station.... :D

Exactly. I'm glad none of my friends would ever pull such a stunt.

Let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm.

I am certainly not even close to being a tailgating master, but we usually have a good time. My experience has been trial and error and has just kind of evolved over the years. We started out with picking up chicken and a couple of sandwiches, some cold drinks, etc, and now bring an assortment of various foods that suit our mood at the time. We've met a number of people that set up close to us and we do a lot of sharing of food and drinks and that is kind of cool. One dude cooks all these different flavors of bacon and shares with us which is nice. I think it helps to get there plenty early to park where you want and get into it. Main thing is bring/meet people that are fun, have good/decent food and drinks, and have as much fun as possible at the tailgate, you never know about the games.;)
