I think Fredrick thought he was being funny when he said 3 point D is the “new timeout” with fan griping. Well ha ha ha - is it funny that you are part of Roy’s second loss at home vs NC State as a UNC coach, and your team gave up 15-30 and couldn’t guard its shadow, particularly in crunch time? The three rules the game - Hopefully we can design some strategy to mitigate it other than hope we stop dribble penetration, because we can’t. Not blaming coaching for this loss, but I cringed when I read that comment and now am cringing even more after watching this game after VT, FSU, etc. sorry to rant...rant over

I beg to differ. It is on the coaches. Guys are playing more on offense then on defense. I don’t care if they are seniors or not I would bench them. Teams can penetrate and put up 3s against easy. Roy needs to adjust or whoever teaching them how to play man to man needs to be fired. They don’t play no defense and where is our lockdown Pinson at. Jb needs step up his defense too. Real talk.

Our defense is bad right now. Our transition defense is as bad as I’ve ever seen. And I agree, the open 3s is a design problem, not a player effort problem (maybe a little of both). But w have to quit collapsing and let our big guys play D without help. At least force the opponent to start making interior shots before we send help. But we don’t. We send immediate help and let opponents get in a rhythm shooting the ball from deep and then we wonder why teams have career games against us from behind the arc.

Something needs to be done or we are going to find ourselves in the NIT. Roy has to understand and plan for every team to test us from deep. And do something about the atrocious translation defense. That’s hard to watch.

He can’t coach this team the same way he’s coached teams in the past when we had an interior presence. I saw perimeter guys in the middle of the lane when their man was spotting up outside the arc, IOW not within 10 feet of their man. We’re not just helping down, we’re completely deserting our man on the perimeter.

We have some pretty good talent, we just have a bad mix. I think much more zone is in order at this point. Even the LOM realized early that his guards couldn’t stop penetration and has played primarily zone.

I also think we need to play our freshmen more because we’re going to need them next year. I think we need to accept the fact that we’re too flawed to do much this year and build for the future.

that zone duke played saturday was pretty good even in defeat.

i don’t know if we have the committed effort to do that, and that feeling sucks as bad as not even trying it.

What do you think that would take?

If we finish 4-5 (for 9-9 in the ACC) and lose our first game in the ACCT, does that relegate us to the NIT?

The last time that happened, we we also the defending National Champions.

That would be weird.

But could happen.

9-9 in the ACC with a first round ACCT loss would put us at 20-12 for the year. I think that has to get us in the tourney. I think we'd have to be 18-14 (meaning 2-7 the rest of the regular season) to be NIT bound given our super strong non-con schedule and how good the ACC is. Last year Michigan State got in even with 14 losses.

We'll get in, it's just a question of can we keep a relatively high seed or not. I don't think we're winning the regular season at this point but how about making some noise in the ACC tourney? We should still get at least one bye and there's no reason we can't be competitive on a neutral court.

I think this is about right. Our SOS is already one of the best and will only improve down the stretch. But I fear we're going to be relegated to a 5 or 6 seed, meaning a pretty tough opponent right out of the gate.

That's what I'm thinking, too. It will be hard to miss the NCAAT. But what seed will we get?

I think 19-13 is about as bad as it's likely to get. 20-12, 21-11, or even 22-11 are more likely.

Unless we are on a 5 or 6 game losing streak with that 19-13, I think we're in the NCAAT.
