I hope there is nothing wrong with my computer. You guys scored on FSU at will nearly every possession. So, please tell me just what happened???

We forgot to practice with wet footballs this week? We don't play well in the rain? We got our ass kicked is what happened.

It think it was a combination, a perfect storm against us. We had to come down from emotionally draining comeback Ws against Pitt and, especially, FSU. The rain is terrible for our offense, because it requires WRs making quick cuts every down. Trubisky clearly struggled big time to pass wet balls. Hood, our only sizable power running RB, did not play. Foster is the perfect DC to exploit our handicaps today. Our secondary looked as unsteady on the wet field as our WRs, which exposed a glaring lack of fundamentals.

And VT had dry balls? Come on, football is an all weather sport. How come VT had no trouble scoring? Lame excuse.

nah, man...if you read some poasts it was all due to weather conditions.

that's a soft mentality.

VT is much better in the running game, on both sides of the ball. UNC is much better in the passing game on both sides of the ball. Wet hurricane conditions cause the game to be played on the ground.

If it was a hurricane in Tallahassee last week even your Noles would have been able to beat us.

What happened is......Virginia Tech has got an offense. With Beamer and Stinespring (the former horrible OC at VT for many years protected by Frank Beamer) VT was good enough defensively to win or compete for ACC Titles, but offensively, the worst system in America. That old system is now gone. The old ultra conservative and non-mis-direction offense is a thing of the past. VT is a solid team. In the Tennessee game, VT had 5 turnovers to Tennessee's 1 turnover and had 110 more total yards than Tennessee. What I am telling you is, Virginia Tech is a solid team and was far underrated. It's scary to think that this VT team is actually talent depleted compared to the past. On paper and by recruiting standards, this is the least VT talented team since 1997 (about 20 years). But, Foster is still around, and when he has just a normal offensive mind to complement his system, it makes a good team. The future is scary good for VT and recruiting is skyrocketing due to the offensive system put in place that will land WR's, QB's, and OL from the Tidewater of Virginia like it used to.

VT also played in the rain. Two teams played in the rain, not just one, and by stats, VT's passing game this year is FAR better than the running game. Again, paradigm shift here. This VT offense is not the offenses of the past under Beamer. The passing offense this year ranked much higher than the rush offense. Contrary to popular belief, VT has struggled some to run the ball this year. The passing game has been lights out and very efficient.

we practiced with wet balls all week.
switzer doubled teamed which everyone who's ever watched a bud foster defense knew would happen except our coaching staff and no one stepped up to replace him.
our coaches didn't think anyone could stop our offense and we didn't have a plan b.
turnovers.

I think UNC is a very talented team and will be back. I would have liked to have seen this game in dry/good conditions as it would have been a different game. I still give the Hokies a solid chance to win but I think the score would have been like watching a tennis match. Good luck the rest of the year.

I don't think there is a great amount of difference in the 2 teams......well except for Saturday.

I don't know. Certainly the weather being so windy and rainy had an impact on our pass game but we should have known the adjusted the way we run our routes and so forth.

Big thing in my mind is the O-line. We are supposed to have a great O-line and they just didn't get it done. Really can't explain it but they haven't been playing up to expectations all year. Athlon had them preseason as the number 7 O-line in the country.

That just hasn't been the case.

I know this post is from a few days ago but I am trying to figure out what you are saying when you say that UNC's passing game is better "on both sides of the ball." Certainly, you were not implying that UNC had a better pass defense than VT, right?

Poorly worded on my part. I meant that UNCs strength on both sides of the ball was passing, and that VTs strength was in the run game on both sides of the ball. Comparing each teams run/pass O/D to their own, not to the other team's.

i'm thinking that practicing with wet balls and playing in a torrential downpour aren't quite the same.
just a guess though.
exactly. strong winds and extremely slippery ground affecting receivers' ability to run their routes can't be duplicated in practice. the answer = run the damm ball. i'm very disappointed in our coaches (and fans who blame the weather and the offensive line.) carolina has a good offensive line and very good running backs. unfortunately, our coaching staff won't use them even when conditions dictate, because grinding out yardage takes patience and they're addicted to the thrill of the big play passing game.

I'll have to say that our OL has been very unimpressive all year. I know we have had injuries but everybody does. We have way too many runs stuffed at the line for no gain or even a loss. I feel that if we have to beat VT running the ball on a wet or dry field that we would lose 9 of 10.

VT loses two ACC games, minimum. Pitt and someone else. I'm not impressed. Our offense was a charitable organization in that game -- gifting VT's offense the ball on our side of the 50, what, 5 times?

Two ACC losses for VT. You heard it here.

They do have the two easiest crossover games imaginable this year with BC and Cuse (currently a combined 0-5 in conference play). They have Miami next weekend - that could be the 2nd loss (If Miami beats us this weekend, I'd imagine they'd be favored in Blacksburg).

The Miami game is a Thursday nighter @ Blacksburg, but for some reason, I like the Canes in that one. They have a new swagger under Richt.

Miami
@ Pitt
GT

^ All possible losses for Moo of Va.

On a side note, I hate VT fans. Hillbilly Henry next to me and @Raising Heel at the game last weekend was the ultimate VT fan stereotype. I'm surprised we didn't come to blows at any point. Of course, the Carolina fan behind me who thought he was the Fan Police Commissioner pissed me off 10x as much as the Hokie fan.

you're lucky, usually the carolina fan that pisses me off at a game is a woman.

He kept sticking up for Ron Cherry every single time I'd complain about a call, and then on our FG attempt, I politely (but a bit loudly so they could hear me) asked three women who were taking their sweet time getting into their seat and directly blocking my view to "please sit down" and he taps me on the shoulder and goes "I don't ask YOU to sit down." . . . . . . . .

Well yeah, that's because I stand on third down and big plays. That's part of the game. Talking to my friends and standing because we're oblivious of game action isn't part of the game.

He was way more interested in bonding with the VT fan in my row than cheering for the Heels or whatever. SMH lol. Oh well, there's one in every crowd.

LMAO. Young girls and women are also up and down all game long and I mean like right after the game starts and early in the 3rd quarter when you would think they should have taken care of the reasons to get up .
