It's not if you turn the news off.

So the protests I see outside of my apartment are just on the news and not in my real life? Man, it looks SO real but I'm glad you cleared it up that I'm just imagining it.

Is that the real or fake news . . ?
Billy, if I may, I think it’s fairly obvious what he was saying ...if you turn off the news and take a look into the real world you’ll see that people of all races/backgrounds/sexes behave the way Mrs Obama and Mr Bush were behaving towards each other. Of course that doesn’t mean there’s not bad in the world but I believe that there’s A LOT more good going on. The news (BOTH SIDES) just shows the hate 90% of the time.

But this isn't new...this has been happening since the beginning of news coverage.

It is also because a decent number of people feel that the person who helps spread the hate happens to be the President. Whether you agree with that or not, people feel this way and it's not just because of the news, his own Twitter can be the primary source on that one.

I guess man. I don’t really let the President dictate how I feel or what I do. For sake of argument let’s say I agree w you and the President is in fact spreading hate. Does that give me the green light or something to go hate on something/somebody just bc he is? Idk maybe I’m the exception not the rule but I don’t have that kind of negative energy in me.

tooph, I think you are the rule - not the exception. And I feel (and hope to God) that this is true for most Americans. The rational minded among us don't want to see the hatred and divisiveness that is coming from the extremes (on both sides).

More than anything, I hope that this country will take to heart what John McCain stood for, and strive to work together for the betterment of America.

@toophly1124 is correct in his understanding of my post. What you see on the news and outside of your window isn't representative of everyday life across the majority of the country. Here's a list of what I see almost weekly in the racist south:

-My mixed race kids playing with their best friend who is black.
- Black people swimming without having any issues.
-A lesbian couple hanging out with a straight couple.
- A white guy giving up his seat on the bus for a black lady.
- A white guy helping a foreigner who can't speak English get to where they need to go.

Does hate exisit? Of course it does. I'm not saying it doesn't. But that's not the norm in everyday America. If you choose to believe that what you see on the news is the rule and not the exception, then I feel sorry for you. I really do. Anyways, I regret jumping into this conversation. Some people can't see the forest for the trees. I'm out.

I don't disagree.

But not watching the news isn't the answer. I think most rational people can also watch the news and understand the context and if there is bias in what they are saying. I think it's also beneficial to see the other side, what you aren't seeing outside of your front door so we can try to understand why some people are so angry.

Riding the MARTA is actually entertaining. I usually take it from Doraville all the way to the Airport, and back when I return home. Beats driving in ATL downtown traffic and it's cheap. And... if I'm lucky, I'll get some interesting fellow transit riders. When I returned home from MSP, it was late on a Sunday night. It was practically empty until I think it was the Midtown stop and BAM! It was like and episode of Soul Train had wrapped and let out! I guess Soul Train is no longer a show. Anyway, it was packed in one stop! All these people had on their clubbing clothes. Some ladies were scantily dressed to boot. I, of course, gave up my seat to a lady.
