George Karl's new book

He has already back tracked several of the key points in the book. Sounds like he is already regretting much of what he said. Love GK, but this might end up biting him in the buttocks!

He bashes former players even bashes Carmelo for having an absentee dad even though melos dad died of cancer when he was very young. Bashes Kenyon Martin who never had issues with anyone he played for even goes after Lillard whom he as never coached. From the language he may as well name it my forty yrs surviving black people

You youngin's invariably try to make everything about race. Karl's problem was he expected every player to compete as hard as he did, on both ends of the floor, and few do.

What does competing hard have to do with a player's parents?

Not a " young'n" by any stretch of the word and I don't want to enter a race discussion and I love GK, but.....he at least should have thought about what he was saying and the way his statements would be interpreted. He clearly wishes he had left much of the book unsaid, not commented about players he didn't know, and rephrased the rest!

I will never read this garbage mostly because I don't want to tarnish my feelings for GK!

I have always thought the world of many of our former players, as they have been great representatives of UNC. As to George's book, no, not gonna read it. Was it co-authored by someone and a late edit...just asking...or did the NBA harden George? Or a little of both?

So I check out some reviews/opinions on the book.

From the Coloradan:

Does it mean coaches are purely decorative? Does it mean that the players are above being coached? Above being asked to step up and improve the weaknesses in their game? Above criticism that comes hand-in-hand with failing to meet expectations? Coaches are the ones who get fired. Apparently, it is always their fault. Players have no accountability.

Why I don't watch the NBA.

my lasting memory of GK was watching him play at Carmichael..... With his droopy socks.... he was notorious for his socks always falling down around his ankles

That's what I want to remember as well! I refuse to let anything ruin my memories of the Carmichael era!

I don't think anyone on here is a youngin as you put it.i am in my mid ,30's with 4 youngin's I had so much respect for GK then I read that... I want to remember the guy who coached the nuggets to the western conference finals

You read the book though, yes?

No those were the exerts and he is now trying to say he was misinterpreted. The actual exert said and I am paraphrasing Kenyon Martin and Carmelo had flawed personalities because they had no daddy in the home. He left out that Carmelo's dad died of cancer. Anyway he goes on to say so now they have all this money and daddy issues... Shall I go on

Actual quotes would be far better for the sake of clarity. This post makes what you allege Karl said sound less damning than your initial post.

If, A - he slammed Carmello's Dad for not "being there" and Mello's dad had died from cancer while Carmello was young, that's incredibly insensitive and unjust.

But, if B- George said that the absence of a Father in the home contributed to a flawed personality without demeaning Carmello's Father? While definitely not PC, that is a matter of opinion and not at all the same as point A.

I can do that I just have to find d the website I read the quoted on give me a few and I will... That work for you?

Sure, and don't bother if you'd rather not.

For clarity on my part - I wasn't slamming or attacking you. Just letting you know that I got two significantly different feelings about the situation from the way you phrased things in post #3 vs post #12.

Haven't read it but it is on my short list, if for nothing other than to determine whether it is as "bad" as the pundits say it is.

Ok, I do not see where he said anything wrong. Strong opinions for sure, but he did not act like Melo's Dad was an absentee father or anything. He simply stated that no father to teach them how to "be a man" was part of the problems (as he perceived it) with Carmelo and Kenyon. Quite a far cry from disrespecting Carmelo's father.

Here is the quote "Kenyon and Carmelo carried two big burdens: all that money and no father to show them how to act like a man” .

As far as Carmelo he does coubtless outreach and helps kids whose dad's are absentees far from the personality defect or lack of being a man that our own Karl alleges

Not everyone shares your opinion on Martin.

WRT Carmelo, Good on him for that! As I said, Karl voiced his opinions. And perhaps Melo has matured.

I can see where loafing on defense and/or in practice would be Hot Buttons for George as he was a fierce competitor who gave all he had on both ends of the court and expects everyone else to do the same.

Was he that involved when he was in Denver and Karl was his coach?

Yes he was very much involved then as well. A lot of people don't know this but he cut his cornrows because he wanted to be taken more serious when he went Infront of CEO'S of companies while in Denver to get their help on projects. I still have family in Puerto Rico melo goes there all the time he has built basketball courts held clothing and food drives he still does. Melo goes back to his old neighborhood in Baltimore a lot as well he has opened learning centers and after school community building for kids. All this while in Denver with Karl.

EVERY TEAM that Kenyon Martin has ever played in had nothing but respect for him. All the coaches management and players except for one. Karl has had issues with players at every drop he has been on and not just stars he consistently loses locker room. My Mom once told me if everywhere you go you have issues guess what itssue (it's you). I think that is why a lot of people are mad he doesn't seem to ever address his own demons while throwing his former players as well as player he never coached (Damion Lillard) under the bus. The only thing he did say was he wished he would have coached jr better. So I can your points as well and agree but I can also see others points l, and agree
