So... I've seen some memes/confessions about the ol' Woody adage since Sunday.

Time to fess up. What/where did you nuts do/go when things got dicey Sunday?

I'll start. I don't have an in-game thing, but I do have these two card games on my phone --- Hearts and Spades (made by the same company) --- and my latest superstition on game day is I have to play and win both games in that order. Well, when things were getting tight in the second half it suddenly hit me that I hadn't finished my Spades game earlier!!(I had gotten a call then forgot about it). So yes, I confess I opened up Spades and sure enough it was paused, so during the TV time-outs I'm furiously finishing the game. I finally got done during the Under-4. And well... you're welcome :D:oops:

was watching the gm with my Dad.when we got down 65-60 I got up and paced around the room and took 4 deep breaths, closed my eyes and calmed myself down. I was freaking out before that, and after I did that the guys came out and did work. Im pretending I had something to do with the W haha.

I watched the Dook and Arkansas fans celebrating, and got pissed for a minute or two before letting them know who won, especially the steal and dunk by Jackson as I high-fived my wife, had a big fist pump, and yelled, "On to the next round"....Whooooooooooooo!

Was cleaning out a rental house, and had to move a bed & a futon to another house. UNC was wearing them out before we started to take the bed apart. The whole time we were loading everything, the Hogs were coming back. The 2nd half started while we were in the truck listening to Jones, & we scored 2 quick buckets. We got out to move the bed & futon into the other house & here comes Arkansas. To shorten the story, I got back in the truck to listen to Jones again at the under 4, & there you go.

I was at a buddy's house..he's a tar heel fan also. Our other buddy is a Dook fan. I'm accustomed to watching big UNC games at home alone to avoid chatter. Things were getting tight, I think Ark was up by 7. I was frustrated not only about the game but my boy was on his phone facebooking the whole time. He kept saying "we will be okay". I'm like dude are you watching this game? It got so tight I stood up right where I was sitting and watched the rest of the game in that same spot standing up right next to my boy. After a few minutes he looks up at me and says "man how long are you going to stand up. I just ignore him i'm so focused on this game. Then I just let him have it... "You mf.. you not even watching the dang game.. you not a dang tar heel fan.. just go back to your mf facebook sh.. I know you from s. carolina but you put your mf gamecock shirt on first.. you should have your tar heels shirt on right now!!! Everyone in the room is looking at me like man it's alright man.. no worries... That's how tight I was when it looked like the game was going downhill.

I "gently" tossed the remote and went out to the woodshop to turn a bowl, therefore missing everything that happened after Ark. first went up by 4. The remote was salvageable once I found all the parts.

I was with friends at Church, recording the game at home. A buddy texted me just before we got started and told me we were 4 down. So I asked him to text me nothing til the final score was in. After way longer than it should have been, he texted. I had it set to vibrate. I decided to wait until our activities were done to even look at the score. Was most pleased when I finally looked and saw we had won. "UGLY win" he called it. "Survive and advance", I replied.

Then I just let him have it... "You mf.. you not even watching the dang game.. you not a dang tar heel fan.. just go back to your mf facebook sh..

I was in the arena for the game. Very top row. Oh well. Still great seeing it in person. (Well, at least the last 3:30 was great.... the middle 30 minutes aged me about 10 years.....)

I was wearing a Go Heels t-shirt - an old one, but I know it is the same shirt I wore when I got to attend and see the 2005 Heels win the national championship in St. Louis against Illinois.....

Problem is - I had a Heels wicking sweat shirt over the top of the t-shirt. The only other time I wore that sweat shirt, was attending a game against UNI last year when we lost without Marcus playing at his homecoming. Bad luck shirt.

No lie - when we got down 5, even though I know in my head and heart it has nothing to do with anything, I took off the wicking sweatshirt, and just wore the Go Heels championship tested shirt.

It was smooth sailing from there on.....

I was at my son's baseball tournament & couldn't watch. My daughter kept calling freaking out about the score.
We have a 4 month old Rottweiler puppy that I ordered a pink UNC Collar. It arrived the day after we lost to Dook. It's now our good luck charm.
I told my daughter to make sure she had her collar on & we'd pull it out.

I was watching at a hostel in Belgium (on a Eurotrip). I had emailed a bar to confirm they would show the game, but of course they couldn't get it on when I went there (ran into similar problems in Amsterdam for the first round). Had to sprint back to my hostel (1.5 miles away) and missed the first 10 minutes of game time.

it was 1AM so everyone was asleep and I couldn't make much noise. That had zenned me out a bit, so in my head I felt at peace with a loss (felt like we were making too many sloppy turnovers and not getting the right bounces) from say the 10 minute mark all the way down to 90 seconds...

And then we scored to go up 1, and Theo slapped the floor and has this manic look of determination in his eyes. Holy cow my heart wrenched, so much emotion because of how bad he clearly wanted it, and I immediately thought of the "Redemption" group chat the team has going on. In a split second I went from peace to NEEDING to win this game. I just couldn't stand to see our guys lose after that. Each possession after that I mimed a silent scream of joy, and we won!! And that floor slap possession was the most intense and incredible defense I've seen all year.

Only 1 more round I have to scrape through with half-baked solutions, and then I'll be back in Chapel Hill for the Elite 8!!

I, too, had to pace...wondered if I would need to change my boxers since they were the ones from our last regular season loss, how could I have done this to our Heels....so I got pissed went in the back for a few, couldn't stand it, went back out to the game, we were about at the 3 min area, time out, and the kids came back out and played the last 3 pretty well, thing is we shouldn't have been in that position to begin with, 4 games left, our guys are really gonna have to dig deep and bring it, redemption guys. Redemption.

Went to my trusty ol truck once Arky got the lead and listened to the boys on radio. Fired up a Rocky Patel Sungrown maduro to calm my nerves and just listened. Sometimes I find that I deal with the radio better than the tv and sometimes I just need to be alone.

These threads are always great.

I was a student at UNC for the "Bloody Montross" game. The dookies came into the Dean Dome as the reigning national champions and were undefeated at the time. It was a back-and-forth game and I don't think either team ever led by double digits.

I was there with three friends, and we were all screaming and yelling the whole game. UNC was trailing in the 2nd half as the game went to timeout, so the four of us ran up to the concourse to hit the water fountains. After the break, UNC went on a mini-run to take the lead. A superstition was born. We did that for the rest of the game and ended up storming the court (don't @ me) when the Heels won.

So that's what I started doing Sunday evening. Repeated trips to the fridge for water. Also, rally cap.

I knew we would win - I had on my lucky Dook blue boxer briefs that I wore during every game of last year's tournament (not the same pair, multiple pairs of the same color). For some reason, they lost their mojo during the last five seconds of last year's tournament.

On a funny side note, my buddy once vacuumed his floor for 15 minutes while we were watching a game against Georgia Tech many years ago. We were down big and he knocked over a plant but we started a run as he was vacuuming the dirt up. If I remember correctly Shammond Williams had a huge game and we won in OT.

My ritual is actually quite similar, and I've done it since I was a kid. When the game is tight, towards the end I got to the freezer during each timeout and get an ice-cube to suck on. It usually pulls us through--it's almost uncanny. :)

Having kids was the best thing that ever happened for my fandom. My 10 year old and 5 year old watch every game with me. Religiously. Every game that I watch, they watch. And sometimes I have to DVR games for my 5 year old because he wants to watch them over and over. They have become much bigger Carolina fans than I. I love it.

What I'm getting to here is that because they watch every game with me, I have to keep it together. 6-8 years ago, before my boys were watching games with me, I'd throw shit, kick shit, yell shit, etc. Now, I realize that my boys are watching every move I make and I certainly don't want to set that kind of example. The residual effect has been me being more rational (read: "grown up") to deal with the highs and lows of the season. This was never more clear than at the conclusion of last year's championship game. When Marcus hit the shot, my boys and I danced around the basement, screaming. But I saw the time left on the clock. I made both of my boys look me in the eye and tell me they'd be ok with it if Nova hit a buzzer beater. Of course they did and both of my sons cried. I sat there in disbelief for a moment until I simply turned off the TV and looked at my kids and said, "Well, that sucked. But next year's our year". They dried their tears, and then the little one asked if I'd read in bed with him. It was largely forgotten by morning. I'm very proud of the way I handled it. It may seem like common sense to just move on but it's not for fans like us that have invested so much for so long. And in our younger days, before you know real hardship, it's easy to get worked up about these games. But I'm a better fan now. A more reasonable and rational fan. And I hope I've set the example for my kids to love the Heels and to love cheering them on. But I also hope I've sent the message that in the end, this is just a basketball game and life goes on.

As for the Arkansas game, we all were simply stunned by the developments. Being up 17 to down 5 was befuddling. I told my boys, "this could be it for this year, guys. And that would be pretty disappointing." But other than that, I do a lot more rubbing of the forehead these days rather than punching walls.

GSD - this is just an awesome post.

Though maybe I wasn't quite as animated as you pre-kids, watching with my two boys (17 and 12) and one girl (15) changes how I act during games too, for the better

I got to take my daughter to the games last weekend in Greenville. We had a great time. She has become more of a loyal fan than my 17 year old, who has moved on to liking the NBA better (barf) and the OKC Thunder (good luck with that).

My daughter's favorite player is Justin Jackson mostly because he was home schooled, just like she is. Our nickname for JJ is "home school". When we call him that, it drives my oldest son crazy, because he is in that stage where he apparently just too cool for anything anyone else enjoys.

Lucky drawers. Lucky shirt rotation. Some are more powerful than others. Must have on the colors prior to tip. When the game is tight late, I have a soft UNC basketball about 6 inches in diameter, and I hold it with the UNC logo facing a certain way, and my fingers aligned on the seams.
I also have a curse for other teams free throws.
Lucky Tar Heel beer glass for extreme circumstances.

When the opposition is shooting FT's , I will say "he never misses FT's". And if he misses the first FT, I will say "he never misses two in a row". It's the old Billy Baroo curse and it's often effective.

Almost forgot. I have the same kind of small Nerf basketball. I punch it and then give it a death grip when the other team has the ball. When UNC gets the ball back, I hold the Nerf ball very carefully with two hands. When the other team is shooting free throws, especially late in the game, I will "crush" the shooter's head between my thumb and forefinger (this is from an old Kids in the Hall skit).

Man, I have issues.

I like this poast.

My 4 boys and I were watching the game. My 15 year old and my 9 year old were getting into it and saying pessimistic things about the game to each other and I had to leave. My 13 year old and I watched the game in my bedroom on my cell phone and we obviously came back and won. I am now trying to decide if I have to watch Butler on my Cell phone in my bed again.

When it got to 65-60, I muted the tv figuring if we lose I didn't have to hear the announcers slobbering over our collapse, and didn't have to hear the dookie fans cheering for Arky.

Well, we went on a 12-0 run so you can thank me for that. And I might just have started my own new tradition. Hopefully I won't need to resort to it for the next four games.

Welp, I got a new one.
After missing 9 second half FTs tonight I started laying my pen on top of the napkin dispenser before each shot and we made all the rest. So... I guess I'm stuck with this quirk now

Watched the game at the local watering hole. Had my 2nd favorite UNC shirt on(saved my favorite for what I figured would be a rematch with UK for a trip to the FF), and my lucky Navy hat with my good luck shamrock pin on it. When they cut the lead to 9, I had to touch my shamrock pin a couple of times to reverse their momentum. Worked like a charm.
