CHARLOTTE - THI spoke with 4-star 2017 defensive tackle Grant Gibson from Mallard Creek H.S. on Sunday at the Rivals Camp Series in Charlotte. At 6-foot-1 and 288 pounds, Gibson is in regular contact with new UNC defensive line coach Tray Scott. Here is what he had to say, including the video of the interview:
Q: How excited are you to be here?
Gibson: I'm excited. It's a great day to come out and compete even though there's a
whole bunch of good players out here.
Q: [/B]What do you hope to get out of this experience?[/B]
Gibson: To learn some new techniques, to go up against some good competition, and just
to improve my skills.
Q: [/B]Is this also a way of measuring yourself against some other terrific players?[/B]
Gibson: Yes, sir, most definitely, to see if I can compete with them and to continue to
work hard.
Q: [/B]How's the recruiting process going for you?[/B]
Gibson: It's going great. It just started off, so I'm trying to take it slow. I'm
trying to make the right decisions.
Q: [/B]Are you fully in control of things on your end or are there people in there[/B]
trying to help you out?
Gibson: It's just me. It's my choice, so that's a good thing.
Q: [/B]What kind of relationship do you have with North Carolina right now?[/B]
Gibson: I love coach Tray Scott. He's a great, great guy, we talk about once a week,
maybe. He wants me to go up there to camp to show my skills and everything.
Q: [/B]What do you like about some of the additions they've made to the staff with[/B]
former coordinators and of course (Gene) Chizik and coach Scott, as you
mentioned?
Gibson: They're coaches, they love to coach. So, they have a whole bunch of energy and
stuff on the practice field, and that's something I like about them. They get
involved with their players.
Q: [/B]Do you have a timeline of when you want to make a decision?[/B]
Gibson: I want to commit by next spring, just to get it out of the way and so I can
focus on football. But, if I have to wait a little bit longer, that's fine,
too.
Q: [/B]Aside from football, what do you like about UNC?[/B]
Gibson: Academics. It's a great place to get a degree.
