So I run a side job as a mobile detailer. While doing a detail in emerald isle I ran into a guy who had a dog that was appropriately named Tar Heel. He noticed my UNC hat, and so we struck up a conversation. During the conversation he explained how his great grand father wrote the fight song for UNC. He may have said great, great grand father. I was skeptical until he pulled a parchment out that was in a special protective sleeve to protect it from uv rays and oil from fingers. It was the single coolest historical document that I have come across that I was able to get that close to. He wasn't a good tipper but the viewing of lyrics scrawled on that parchment was pretty cool, and made up for the fact that this fellow Tar Heel did not tip. Anyway I thought this would be a pretty light conversation piece since a lot of threads on here get heavy in politics. Have a blessed day everyone.

That's really cool! Sounds like a great experience (well, other than not being a good tipper. Guess he's not getting the residual checks for the song)

I think song copyrights expire after 75 years, so it's in the public domain now (not sure if universities get exceptions to that or not).

Yeah, it is probably public domain now that you mention it, but copyright laws are so crazy, I think things created in a certain window (like between 1920-1980) the copyright lasts for the lifespan of the creator, plus another 90 years or something.

How in the tar heel blue heaven do you guys know this stuff?
I had watched a video about it a while back that was basically "Disney owns copyrights on all sorts of stuff and will forever, so don't even think about trying to make your own movie about The Little Mermaid." Disney is seriously responsible for a lot of the current copyright laws.

The Little Mermaid is sexist anyway. What should be made is "The Body Positive Aquatic Carbon Based Lifeform."

Yeah, I saw something on that too. IIRC, copyright laws were changed so that Disney could keep a firm grip on Mickey Mouse. They did NOT want Mickey to become public domain; I guess I can't really blame them.
