Great JB read plus stats

VERY solid article !

I said when Joel committed to UNC that one day we would talk about him in the same ways we talk about Ty, Ray, Kendal, as deserving to be considered as a true member of that group of great UNC PGs and I certainly have not changed that stance.

Awesome read about a great Tar Heel!

Being a true Tar Heel is about much more than numbers, and JB has all the intangibles as well. Soon he will be on the revered list with other great Tar Heel PGs!

He is always in the gym too. Theo be right beside him as well. So I expect a jump with Theo play as well.

Nice article indeed. Joel will probably be our least dispensable player next year, the one we absolutely can't afford to lose to injury. I believe he'll have a great year, and we certainly need him to.

Absolutely NOT written by Gary. His title would have been

"Joel Berry - The Greatest Tar Heel Point Guard Since Phil Ford From Day One And If You Don't Get That Then You're An Idiot!!" :D

Great article.
Watch it, Soap ;)....
Seriously, I've heard tales from folks who saw Phil as a HS soph that they knew they were seeing something special... and folks down in Florida were saying the same about 4 years ago. I blanch at comparing anybody to Phil. But I will say that seeing JB in AAU was enough to know he was a can't-miss star as a Carolina PG.

:D

May he exceed even your expectations as a Tar Heel! Go Berry, Bury Dook!!

If Berry can pick up the 3-4 assist Paige was getting and adding 3-6 points more tham last season, he will become a star. Crazy part os we all know it is very possible he can do this.

I don't think Joel will pick up all those assists, this is a potentially super unselfish team with good passing from Kennedy, Justin and Theo too. So while JB's dimes should go up, he'll likely lead the nation in the "pass that lead to the assist" stat.

Adding 3-4 assist is alot I agree, but if the assist do not go up that many it will be crucial that his PPG hits around 16-18. I am sure throughout the season we will find another option in the backcourt to go with Berry, but as for now he is it. Either he will be dropping dimes to our bigs from Wings to Centers or he will be doing most of the scoring from outside (Nate getting minutes at PG, and Berry playing SG is one of our options next year).

Looking at Berry's numbers last year I don't see why he will not increase assist and PPG with Marcus gone. How much I have no idea.

Nice Oz, few people outside the Carolina family understand the "pass that led to the assist" stat.
Dean sure did...

I think JJ will lead us in scoring and that we will have at least four guys who average double digits in scoring. Personally, I think we need JJ, Joel, and Isaiah to all average about 15 PPG, night in and night out, if we're to make the FF again. And I believe we need a couple more guys to average 10 PPG and I think Kennedy and Theo can do that.

I'm not worried about our assists because several of our guys can drop the dime. Joel, Theo, and JJ can and will all distribute the ball. I wouldn't be surprised if Theo leads the team in assists, especially if he starts as some speculate.

Don't be surprised if JB leads in scoring. Like you, I think it will be very balanced and if JJ finds his outside shot he could be the leader for sure, or Hicks if he can stay on the floor long enough. Barring injuries we should have JB, JJ, Hicks and Meeks all average in double figures, and probably Theo as well.

What I am very confident in is Berry. He's got all the chops and there'll be no more deferring to Marcus. JB I believe will be in "Lead-Guard" mode. 16 and 5 will do nicely. Roy has already told Joel in off-season meetings that he wants him to "be more aggressive offensively" next season. Translation? Here are the keys to the Ferrari, son... keep it between the ditches but make it scream

As for assists, the main deal is to convert the damned things! Our number of blown dimes (especially from JB) was outlandish at times last season. Just improving on that will be a big step. Also, Theo is a helluva play-maker from the Wing and if he gets starter minutes you can count on him picking up most of Marcus's 3-4/game.

I will not be shocked but minor surprised if Joel leads us in scoring because he will not feel as if he needs to be our ONLY back court scorer. I really believe we will get 16-18ppg from our 2 guard spot, we have to many talented scorers at that position to get much less. You get that kind of scoring from your 2 guard position (maybe combined totals from 2 or 3 different 2 guards) then your PG is not going to be shooting as much and become more of a distributor. I absolutely agree Joel can score 17-18 a game, I think he could score 20+ a game but I think we are better as a team if he scores less than that but distributes to his mates.

In some ways I like our ability to shoot the ball next season more than how we shot it this past season considering how long Marcus was in that slump and it taking most of the season for Justin to really get rolling.

And assists, was wondering how long it was gonna be before gary spoke up about the crazy numbers of blown chippys that cost Joel assist numbers last season, got to finish the chippys!

For reals. I kept that number last season and it jumped out. If you feed the post but he misses and tips in his own miss, or misses and goes to the line you don't get credit in the boxscore... they're "coach's assists" yeah, but..... and how many wide open 3s did JJ and/or Marcus miss at various points from passes that hit em right in the trigger zone?

As for scoring, yeah JB could put up 20+, but I think we'll see a Lead Guard balance. I think you're being a bit optimistic about 2-Guard production, but that would be nice. I get the vibe that Roy is green-lighting JB the way he did with Marcus when he was playing Point, albeit with more weapons to spread the ball to. Again, something like 16 and 5 would be a pretty sporty starting production target.

OK, so lets back in to the 2 guard scoring. Tell me this, kenny, do you see him as a 4-6 or 6-8 or 8-10ppg guy? I think he is a 8-10 guy but lets say he is 6-8ppg. Nate, is he 2-4 or 4-6 or maybe 6-8? I have him more a 4-6 guy. 7th Woods 2-4 guy or 4-6 guy or 6-8 guy or 8-10 guy, I see him as a 6-8guy, BRob 0-2 or 4-6 or 6-8 or 8-10, I put him 2-4ppg.

Kenny - 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, or +10 = I see him as a 8-10ppg guy
Nate - 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, or +10 = I see Nate as a 4-6ppg guy
7th Woods - 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, or +10 = I see him as a 6-8ppg guy
BRob - 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, or +10 = I see him as a 2-4ppg guy

So totals I see coming from our 2 guard spot 20-28ppg just adding all that up. I like to use a 75% of what I think they will actually score as a fudge factor and 75% of 20-28/ a game is 15-21ppg game from the position and if I average that it comes out to an expected on average of 18ppg from the 2 guard position.

Hey, that is a durn good reply to your challenge! ;)

Well, remember Dave, it only counts while they're playing the 2 ;). And I don't think BRob gets significant minutes this season barring injury to someone else. But hey, I'm on your side --- I would love to get 15+ out of that position on a regular basis.
