I have 15 kids in one of my karate classes ranging in age from 7-12. Not a single one could tell me what we celebrate on july 4th. Some responses:

About a month ago we were discussing how karate came to the us after ww2. Not one single student knew who we fought in ww2. None knew about pearl harbor. None knew the us had dropped an atom bomb on japan.

It's not just kids. Every year on the 4th, National Public Radio tweets the full text of the Declaration of Independence. And every year, without fail, some doofus angrily responds with something about treason, taxpayer-funded propaganda, or similar ignorance. It really is remarkable.
