For years, viewership of the NFL continued to rise as the NFL created it's own network which began to broadcast Thursday night games, while the NFL expanded it's market to England and Mexico to create more of a worldwide appeal for it's sport....At first glance, it seemed to have worked, but I wonder if that is still the case today?

As a longtime Panther fan, I was more than disappointed with last year's Super Bowl, and it was not because they lost, but it was more about the effort at times, along with the Postgame interviews or lack thereof....I wanted Cam Newton when the Panthers selected him, but grew sour very fast after the Superbowl when he refused to dive for the fumble, and then acted the way he did in the Postgame, and I think his team also felt that frustration, and this season's results were a reflection of that because it seemed as though he lost a lot of respect from fans and his teammates afterwards, and felt his effort this year was lacking compared to his effort the year before, but enough about that....

There are other factors which I think has soured a lot of people on today's NFL product, and a lot of those came to the forefront this year, beginning with the NFL's stance on players kneeling for the National Anthem, along with the Inflate gate which had no bearing on the outcome of that game, whether the balls were inflated or not?....Then there's the constant negative tone from players like Bret Farve, Bo Jackson and other former NFL stars who have publically stated that they would encourage their kids to forego the sport of football if they knew what they know now about CTE, and the long term effects of Concussions....We've seen this year the retirement of several NFL players who chose to end their careers before it really even started, and this seems to be filtering down to the College level....We've seen the last several years the drop in numbers from Pop Warner and other youth football leagues around the country and in our on neighborhoods..We've seen the left-wing liberal media hammer away at the game of football at every opportunity..The entertainment industry the last several years have felt the need to make some kind of political statement at the Super Bowl, rather than just entertain the fans as they were chosen too do, and that is likely to continue this Sunday with Lady Gaga's halftime show?

For all of those reasons and more, I for the first time that I can remember, really don't care if I even watch the Super Bowl or not, and I am apparently not the only person that feels this way as this year's Super Bowl ticket prices have dropped dramatically, and I'm just not sure if it has anything to do with New England versus Atlanta or not?...The rule changes that we have seen the last several years along with the constant interruption of the game due to replays, and the flat out missed calls also seems to cast a lot of doubt about the integrity of the game as a whole, which has also bothered me at times because some of these replays seem to be clearcut, but somehow the replay official sees the replay much differently than a lot of us do, which makes you scratch your head, and wonder if he or a family member is on the take or not, and the officiating on the field as a whole just seems to be getting worse and worse every year in the NFL and College?....It just seems to me that all this negative news from the NFL has really had an effect on how the NFL is viewed today as opposed to how a lot of us grew up viewing the game.....

Maybe, I'm just off base, and people see the game differently than I presently do, so I wanted to get everyone else's take of how they view the NFL today and the Superbowl this Sunday, and whether they too feel the NFL's best days are behind them?

What's your opinion?

I'll respond piecemeal:

I think CTE will take an effect on the way the game is played. I think eventually they're going to take hitting out of the game as much as possible (we're already seeing this with the new kickoff rules to cut down on special teams hits, targeting penalties/fines, etc.). The game won't die because of CTE per se, but it may get reduced to something that more resembles 7 on 7 flag football - which may cause fans to lose interest and kill the game/league that way.

In regards to refs being on the take - I never rule out that possibility (unlike some on this board), but I think NFL and football refs in general have less ability to fix games than basketball refs.

The NFL knows that Thursday Night Football sucks. The matchups are garbage, the quality of the product is garbage as the teams are working on a short week so are over-sore/injured from the previous week and under prepared. They just can't admit it yet because they still have sponsors signed on for a couple more years. Sponsors would be pissed if they said "Ya, we're scrapping this garbage as soon as the contracts are up" but I imagine that's what they'll do. The international expansion makes sense - but I don't see how they could feasibly put a team in Europe just due to travel concerns. I don't know why they'd want to put one in Mexico.

I think Roger Goodell is a moron. He might be good on the business end of the league, but the sooner they get someone else in there for the discipline and as a public face for the league - the better. He suspends a player (Tom Brady) for the possibility of maybe having known something about an equipment violation for 4 games, which is 4 times as long as he suspended a player (Josh Brown) for beating the shit out of his wife.

I think fantasy football has kept the NFL propped up for a few years. The games are way too long as a result of replays, and commercials, and stoppages to hold people's attention for 3.5+ hours. They need to make sure that games are wrapped up in under 3 hours.

I haven't analyzed the ticket prices for the Super Bowl. But if there's been a drop the main reason would be that the Falcons are from a small media market and their fan base blows. If this were Patriots/Cowboys the prices/ratings would be through the roof. A small part of the drop might also be the location - Houston isn't exactly a destination for the casual fan as San Diego or Miami would be.

LMAO at Atlanta being a small media market. That's nowhere near accurate. As far as the fan base goes, the issue is they don't have one. Atlanta is full of people who are not native to Georgia. Typically you don't change who you root for when you move so the sports teams here just don't have a large following. @TarHeelNation11 can back me up on this.

If you meet a white person in Atlanta that was born and raised in Atlanta (including Metro Atlanta), it's like finding a unicorn.

Serious question and it's something I've never understood.

Why doesn't the NFL simply put a league-wide clause in all contracts that states it (the league and teams) are not responsible for any long-term health effects players suffer while playing? Why couldn't the league do that? Problem solved. Players are still going to play.

Go to any Southern state and tell these towns to stop playing football. LOL. Yeah right.

In most states, it's likely any such contract or waiver would be deemed unconscionable if enforcement was unethical. A good lawyer would chew that up and any such waiver wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on.

How do we keep kids from NOT playing the sport of football because that does seem to be the trend the last several years?.....Do youth football leagues start playing FLAG football to keep kids interested while making the parents less worried about the long term health effects of the sport?....This trend as most know is the most concerning because if kids don't play the sport: Then, the sport will end altogether in the near future...

Should the NFL just do away with the Superbowl halftime shows that are becoming more and more political?

Should the NFL keep players in the dressing rooms until the National Anthem plays to avoid future political statements from players that makes veterans like me less interested in the game of Pro Football?

What future changes to equipment, or what future rule changes can be made to lesson the long term effects of concussions, or is it even possible to do so without making the sport less interesting than it currently is?

How will the NFL keep fans safe from future terrorist attacks, which most people feel will likely happen one day?

Should the NFL expand to overseas' markets, or should they just concentrate on making the game safer at home by improving equipment, rules and security?

How can the NFL keep from slowing the game down too much due to replays in order to keep fans interested?....People are becoming less and less inclined to watch a game that is becoming too long?....It's a tough subject because fans clamored for the replays to correct errors on the field by officials because the integrity of the game was beginning to be questioned, but now the replays at times seem to take longer than timeouts do, and fans nowadays are not as patient as fans of the past when it comes to demands on their time in watching the sport of football....A lot of people feel this has been the one area that has hurt the sport of baseball with maybe the exception of the World Series....Fans nowadays are just not willing to devote 3 or 4 hours out of their day to watch a sport....We are now a time-driven society!

Will the game of Football survive?

Serious question because I don't know. Has golf viewership declined? Coverage typically seems run four hours on most tournaments.

I tend to listen to games on the radio these days so I can do projects at the same time. And I like hearing the radio commentators better than TV anyway.

NFL was garbage this year. The worst part is it the only major pro sport where OT is decided by change. A coin flip, really? At least give both teams a chance and do rock, paper, scissors. Bring back the XFL, ha ha.

After I'm dead in gone it will turn into the National Flag football League the way it's going.

sheesh

the nfl is the best product on tv and will continue to be.

If that's the case, why were the ratings for NFL broadcast this year reportedly down from the year before?

Early in the season, the ratings are generally always higher, but by midseason, there were only a handful of teams that were worthy of watching, and those were the teams that ultimately made the playoffs....Of course, I'm a Panthers' fan, so my interest faded as the team faded...

As a Military Veteran, I chose NOT to watch any NFL game involving the 49ers once the season began, due to Kaperprick's National Anthem protest, and lost interest in the NFL once other players from other teams, chose to follow his lead....Just the way I personally feel about that subject!

Thursday night games as mentioned above are beginning to become unwatchable, especially late in the season...Fortunately, we do have Thursday night College Football as an option....Can't remember the last time that I stayed up on a Thursday night to watch an entire NFL game?

The Media focused on the players who knelt for, and disrespected the National Anthem/Flag more so than the game itself early in the season last year, which probably didn't help with ratings either....Politics and Football just don't mix IMO, and most of us who work for a living through the week, don't want to watch drama off the field, but rather prefer the drama on the field...Notice, I haven't even mentioned the officiating which seemingly continues to get worse every season, and the replays doesn't seem to help that argument but instead made the officiating at times look even worse than we thought in hindsight, which brings the integrity of the game itself into question IMO?

Unfortunately, there is little else to watch on Sundays, so the NFL will always generally fill that void until we find out which teams suck and which teams are actually worth watching.....

The Superbowl game was very entertaining and historic this year, and would have been even better without all the Political Commercials that were broadcast during the game, but that's my opinion and probably not the opinion of Democrats who probably loved the Commercials more than the game itself...

Must admit that I did enjoy the scene of Veterans overseas who were watching the game with interactions with their families back home, and thought that was a fitting tribute by the Fox Network to recognize those who are protecting our freedoms abroad that allow all of us to enjoy the sport of football here at home....

That's my current perspective of the NFL as a Veteran, and understand that some Veterans feel differently, and that's fine too!
