from my piece "Plenty To Play For In D.C."
Williams’ UNC teams have opened NCAA play in North Carolina in 2005 (Charlotte), 2007 (Winston-Salem), 2008 (Raleigh), 2009 (Greensboro), 2011 (Charlotte) and 2012 (Greensboro) going 12-0 in those games. In 2008, Carolina started in Raleigh and won the regional in Charlotte.
In the other five NCAA Tournament appearances, all of which were out of state, Williams’ Tar Heels are 6-4 during the opening weekend. Those sites: Denver; Dayton; Kansas City; San Antonio; and Jacksonville, FL.
As a program, UNC has opened NCAA Tournament play in its own state in 12 different years since Black Sunday in 1979, when UNC and Duke both lost at Reynolds Coliseum in the second round, and own a 21-0 mark in those contests.
If you include the regionals the Tar Heels have played in the Old North State – 1982, 1998, and 2008 – Carolina is 27-0 in NCAA Tournament games in its own state since 1979.
Carolina's last four NCAA title runs also hsppened to begin in state, too
