Sporting News brief discussions on this it thinks most Riley to garner votes.

"Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina (+2500)
Week 10 stats: 26-for-37, 293 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, 74 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD

2022 stats: 2,964 yards, 71.2%, 29 TDs, 3 INT, 4 rushing TDs

Maye was outstanding once again in a 31-28 win over Virginia. He is far and away the best freshman quarterback in the country and his number stack up with anyone on this list. North Carolina sits at 8-1 and has a good chance to meet Clemson in the ACC Championship Game."

IF, IF, IF the Heels win out, Drake deserves some serious consideration. Happy to
have him in our program for as long as he remains. GDTBATH.
He's only required to be 3 years after HS to get drafted by NFL. So my guess is that 2023 will be his last UNC season. So many top guys now go NFL after 3 years, and then many more go NFL after 4 years, that is nuts ton redshirt anybody who was 4 or 5* unless there is an injury. Those who live pop to potential will not be on a campus longer than 4 years.

I don't think the way UNC has won games this season will be enough to get Drake in the top 5 in the Heisman conversation. If UNC manages to really win the rest of their games with domination, then that will make a difference, especially if he shines like he has been in the last 9 games.

He should easily win ACCPOY

Most of those games have been won because of him. That will only help his profile. If we finish 11-1 and he continues to play at this level, he'll be in NY.

Oh, the Heels have to have him to win any and every game... no doubt. I just don't think those that do the choosing are going to consider Drake unless UNC wins every game left, and wins it convincingly, even Clemson. UNC just doesn't carry the same football clout as Ohio State, Tennessee, even Oregon. And, UNC doesn't play anywhere near the same level of competition as those other schools.

I agree. If this team had DJ Uiagalelei at QB, it would maybe 3-6, perhaps even 1-8, right now. His plodding would be magnified several times beyond what we see rather easily at Clemson.

And I think that if Maye had gone to Bama, the Tide might even be undefeated. I think Maye is a better QB than Young, or Stroud. Hooker? He was a slightly above average ACC QB at VT. His cast, especially at skills positions but also on the OL, at Tennessee is much better, so his stats are much better.

All off the above has meaning that is more than just how good Maye is: it also shows how much Mack has failed to accomplish at UNC in nearly 4 years. He has had the 2 best QBs in program history, and how many Coastal titles does he have, much less ACC Championships, must less major bowl Ws? Without those two super QBs, Mack at UNC the 2nd time around would be very lucky to be just a few games under .500.

All that is the reason Maye deserves the Heisman. No QB in the nation could have have done with this UNC team what Maye has.

QBs always have to win, but your comment about winning convincingly makes no sense. You're saying that he's so good he's the only reason the team is winning, but because he's so good he can't win because he's the only reason we are winning. If we win out, he'll be in NY. Unless something changes, his stats will be too good to leave him out. The lack of clout only factors into his chances of winning, not his chances of an invite.

UNC won a combined 5 games in the two seasons prior to Mack's arrival for Mack 2.0. He's won 29 games in 4 seasons with 5 more games to play. He's on pace to average 8-9 wins in his first 4 seasons back. Credit Mack for bringing in the 2 best QB's in program history.

8-1

ETA: Mack's first year back went a helluva lot better than what that BIG TIME coaching staff has done over in Miami thus far. Just be thankful Gattis isn't over here wasting Drake's prime.

Touché!

Dan Orlovsky, whose primary focus at ESPN is on the NFL, says he thinks Maye could be the #1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Let's hope Longo doesn't kill that like he did with Sam.
I think that was more failures of the OL combined with failure to develop a WR corps combined with failure to find a 2nd sound RB than it was of Longo as OC.

Add to all that the weakness of the D, which forced Howell to feel all the pressure all the time, and your get a disappointing year by Howell.

Sam had the exact same issues in his third year (specifically holding on to the ball too long and not throwing it away) that he had in his first. That's a development issue.

On this, we agree. Sam felt so pressured to carry the team that he did hold on to the ball too long at times. Plus, we have to remember that Drake is much taller than Sam and can see/pass over the linemen much easier.

I saw a stat on sportscenter comparing the hopefuls and Maye is a whopping 79% of our offense. A lot more than all the other candidates. That’s gotta count for something

It does, but it does not outweight being in the SEC or Big Ten. ACC basketball casts a huge shadow, but ACC football casts almost no shadow. And UNC refusing to act to make its football a major player on the national stage, which it has sone back to right after Choo left, is the prime reason that ACC football never progressed until FSU joined and has not progressed any since then.

Yep... even if he plays like a madman in the next two games.

He might be a front-runner next year. But, next year has its own variables.
The 2023 schedule is going to be tougher. SoCar now has a MAJOR win under Beamer and could be expecting a run at the SEC East next year. WE open with them in Charlotte. WE again have App St. Then we have Minnesota, which is far from an easy place to win There is more HS hockey talent in MN than HS football talent). Yet PJ Fleck again has a winning team this year, after 9 wins in 2021. And in the ACC, we get Clemson next year at Memorial Stadium.

And then we have the Portal. Do we lose anyone to the Portal? Can we use the Portal to land a player or 2 we need to fill gaps?

South Carolina sucks.

I can't imagine Jacolby Criswell sticking around.
I don't see any place that I think he would be quick to want to leave for, unless;ess he has just decided he wants to be closer to home. AR is a very long ways from Chapel Hill. What would make the difference, I think, is if Sam Pittman were to use back channels to make it known that he does not see Malik Hornsby as his best bet after Jefferson and he would be interested in Criswell.

Plus there is almost certainty that Maye will not be in Chapel Hill after 2023.
