Florida State's Jimbo Fisher and LSU interim coach Ed Orgeron have emerged as strong candidates in the school's search to replace Les Miles as head football coach. Some of LSU's largest financial backers are starting to warm to the prospect of Orgeron leading the team next season and beyond, according to a source connected with the school's benefactors.

Orgeron's fate might hinge on his ability to lure a top offensive coordinator to Baton Rouge to join his staff if he were hired.

"He would have to have the right guy lined up, or there will be a lot of resistance from influential people," according to a source briefed on the search.

Alleva has a list of about a dozen or so coaches, preparing for what could be a lot of maneuvering in college football coaching circles if programs such as Notre Dame and Texas have vacancies.

Other names being considered by LSU are North Carolina coach Larry Fedora, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Houston coach Tom Herman. Fedora's reps have been contacted by LSU, according to sources.

Alleva is said to be targeting the end of this month to the early part of December in announcing his decision, which could give the new staff the ability to host recruits on official visits before the NCAA dead period starts Dec. 12.
