DALLAS - North Carolina junior tailback Elijah Hood is one of the preseason candidates for the 2016 Doak Walker Award, announced Thursday by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Hood is a punishing runner who ranked among the best in UNC history as a sophomore in 2015. He started all 14 games at tailback, carrying the ball 219 times for 1,463 yards and 17 touchdowns. Hood ranked third in the ACC with 1,463 rushing yards, the second-highest single-season total in Carolina history behind only Don McCauley’s brilliant 1970 season of 1,720 yards.
Also an outstanding student, Hood has twice been named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
