How bout the new redshirt rule?

Also, I guess it makes it more likely we see PT from William Barnes, Ruder, Fortin, etc, for example vs Western Car, ECU, etc.

Frosh can play any 4 games (including the bowl) and still keep their redshirt.

So like Lawler, Melton, Billy Ross, Gemmel all could've played during the west car blowout last yr, while still redshirting. Or maybe Gemmel plays v ncsu instead of us going dime due to so many injured LBs... While keeping his redshirt.

"College athletes competing in Division I football can participate in up to four games in a season without using a season of competition"

Starts this season.

I don't like it.

IF we can get big leads it will allow reps our frosh dt which will be nice... Give them some film and live action. Same w the QBs and Barnes.

That would be nice, but I think it will make the rich richer.

I think I like it. Can get some kids real game reps, which I believe are more important than practice reps. Can be used late in the season to jump start next season. Could help in a situation like ours last season where injuries put you in a bind. I do see your point though, could make the good, deep teams even deeper. Might also keep the younger players sharper throughout the season. Knowing you are going to redshirt and not get into any games has to impact your prep and practice at some point in the season.

Seems like a good rule to me. Let these guys get their feet wet in blow outs or against lesser competition without having to blow a whole year of eligibility. Not sure it that it would be more beneficial to any certain type of team or program. Just something that is good for the athletes across the board.

Hard to help Bama or Ohio St get richer.

It will help programs that are seen as on the rise. Those guys with some game experience who do not want to wait to start at a Bama or Ohio St or OU or Florida, etc, will be able to go all kinds of places. They will not want to go to program on a downslide. They will want to go to play immediately on a winning team that could become a league champ in the playoffs.

I think it would definitely give the guys an much better idea of what they need to work on before their 2nd season. Game reps are much better than practice reps in my mind.

Somebody help me here. I've been looking but haven't found anything that suggests there are any restrictions on the 4-game redshirt. For example, you can play 4 games and still redshirt *only if* one of the following applies: the player becomes injured, no more than two conference games, etc. Are there any restrictions at all or is the rule wide open?

Wide open.

I think this will be extremely helpful at the QB spot this year assuming Fed takes advantage. Most people seem to think that our returning QB's aren't a long term answer. If one of them wins the starting position, I'm hoping Fed will still get Ruder some minutes to see how he does. If it looks like he's not there yet he can still keep the red shirt on him. The question is, will Fed take advantage of that?

Depends on whether or not we can get a big lead. And depends on who is the backup. Example, If elliot starts, and were are up big vs ecu, do we play surratt or Ruder/Fortin?

If the other QB's aren't performing then the size of the lead shouldn't matter and the new rule gives you a chance to play everyone on the depth chart with no consequences. Figure out the order using in game experience.

CS still has the potential to be that guy, but Elliot does not imo. If he wins the job we are in trouble for this year and possibly beyond. It would be great to get Ruder some legit reps if we have the opportunity. The best case scenario for this team though is for CS to win the job and play very well.

Start Ruder the first four games, and burn his redshirt when we hit 4-0 with him under (behind) center.
