Due to it being "sexist" and "exploitation." Ditto for the accompanying dance team. Your thoughts?

For reference, this article (warning: may cause you to bang your head in annoyance). I peruse the Bears' SB Nation site because of Mitchell.

Are cheerleaders scholarship athletes?

If yes - they'll never be eliminated from colleges. Due to Title IX, having those female scholarships is invaluable. If they cut cheerleaders, they'd have to cut a men's varsity sport.

If no - probably very soon. One college that has shitty athletics will figure out that grandstanding about getting rid of cheerleaders will put them in the national spotlight for being "forward-thinking" and "progressive". Then every other one will follow suit as the media starts to use the first school as an example to call the rest of the schools bigots.

There are male cheerleaders on the squad, so I doubt they ever get rid of the cheerleaders. I guess it's possible the dance team goes away. I've never really understood their purpose anyway. They do the same thing as the cheerleaders. They are nice to look at though.

No, they're not scholarship athletes -- UNC's aren't any way. So no Title IX implications. The only cheerleaders on athletic scholly are schools like Kentucky who compete in actual competitive cheerleading.

Most schools have two teams, one with the actual competitive girls on it, and then the “show” team that you see at games, which will usually have just the better looking girls. I could see that aspect coming under fire.

So could I, but the question is "why?" The women on the cheerleading "show" squad do it voluntarily... i.e. they want to do it. I fail to see what's wrong with it.

Don’t have an answer for you on that one.

We still condone beauty pageants so I think the cheerleaders are safe for now

Cheering for one team is insensitive to the other team. No place for that.
I disagree. I think instead of teams competing against other teams, they should be cheering on each other to do well. That should be the job of the defense. They shouldn't be trying to stop the other team from scoring, they should be encouraging them to score. That way, both teams can win together.:)

Agreed. In addition, @strummingram should feel compelled to apologize to moo fans for what our ancestors did to them for years and what’s still going on today.

The conundrum here is that injustices towards moo will never stop until we acknowledge that injustices happened in the past. So as long as we never quote all-time series records, or win streaks against them, we should be able to "keep them in their place".

No, next they’ll be seeking reparations in the form of banners to hang at cow palace. We should have to give them ours because, discrimination. Or something like that.

Our guys clearly discriminated against then because of their lack of athleticism back in the day, thus forever causing them to behind in all athletics since. It’s only fair we give up all our trophies, banners and other awards to make up for all those years of beating their arses, I mean “discriminating” against them
