That the current National Champion Tar Heel team will be remembered more as the 1993 team was? That team wasn't filed with superstars but just hard workers who refused to quit. 57 of course put us in the map. The 82 team with Jordan et al is unquestionably the most remembered with the 05 team of Felton and company 2nd. The 09 team was also loaded and had #50 So does anyone agree where this team will stand when it's looked back at in time? I would rank the Championship teams as follows
1- 57
2- 82
3- 05
4- 09
5- 93
6- 17

Don't get the wrong idea I love em all. I just think this team, when time goes by, will be looked at as a great team but not a dominating one.
Thoughts?

JJ was ACC POY and 1st Team AA. We'll get 2-3 jerseys in the rafters, and at least that many NBA players. Kentucky, Wichita State, and Gonzaga were the only teams with more 20 point wins this year, and they were all in much weaker conferences. I don't think we were all-time dominant, but this was definitely a great team.

I don't know enough about our history yet to compare to the other teams, but I'm going to Youtube some of the older games this year. I just finished the FF game vs Houston in '82. :)

The 2009 team was never challenged in the Tournament. A bit of a scare with Lawson's big toe and LSU, but they won every game by double digits. Have to put them higher on that list.
Agreed. They had the most dominant run of any UNC team. I think the 82 team could beat them in a series, but that's it.

'57 beat Wilt, so they get a little bump in my rankings. The '09 and '05 teams were just so dang good. '93 was just anonymous. If Jackson goes on to have a somewhat impactful pro career, I think that will help the 2017 team "age well" when we look back at it. So for me....

05
09
82
57
17
93

Isn't that 1993 really well remembered because it won partly due to the most infamous play in college basketball history? In terms of power ranking the title teams, the 1993 team beat the most talented team in CBB history as well.

If I were to rank:

1. 2009 - They had it all and was by far the best shooting team of the title winning teams.
2. 1982
3. 2005 - Although Roy has said that if that team and the 2005 Illinois team played a series, Illinois would have won
4. 1993
5. 2017

I have no idea about 1957... But I'm assuming they'd lose to any of the other teams because that's 25-60 years of physical evolution of bigger, faster, stronger athletes.

Or the pass to Worthy?

I'd love to see 1982 and 2009 go head to head (in their prime), talk about a basketball game. Wow.

For S's & G's...

Jimmy Black vs. Ty Lawson - Jimmy was the heart and soul of that 82 team and distributed the ball brilliantly all season. However, he would have had a serious challenge containing Ty in transition.

Edge -09

Michael Jordan vs. Wayne Ellington - Now this isn't a complete runaway because this is a 19 year old MJ, not the GOAT yet. That said, MJ was still a beast defensively back then and Wayne was giving up some size.

Obvious edge here to 82

Matt Doherty vs. Danny Green - Doherty was a fine player but I imagine he would have a tough time scoring on Danny.

Edge - 09

James Worthy vs. Tyler Hansbrough - Good god this matchup would be amazing. 2 UNC legends. I can't give an edge.

Edge - Even.

Sam Perkins vs. Deon Thompson - Pretty obvious one here, even though you're talking about a young Sam.

Edge - 82

Bench - Weak bench for 82. Buzz, Braddock, and Brust combined to score about 5ppg. 09 has a huge advantage with super freshman Zeller and Davis along with Frasor and Graves.

Edge - 09.

Bench tips it to 09 for me.

It seems as though some of the younger posters here never saw the 57 team play in person and don't realize just how good they were. They deserve a lot more respect than some are giving them. Different era, different game, I know, but those guys could flat play!

That 09 team is a top 10 all time national championship team, that team if it was still together they would still be winning national championships!

'09 is the best UNC Title team IMO. Jordan was only a 13-14 ppg scorer as a FR. Ellington as a JR was great. We aren't talking about what they became as PROs, rather at that point in time. I think....

'09
'82
'57
'05
'17
'93

There is no way to compare eras as every other team would destroy the '57 team on size and athleticism. The '05 team vs the '17 team would be fun to watch. Heck, if Donald got hit lot from 3 the '93 team could beat any of the teams not the top 2.

Jordan was only a 13-14 ppg scorer as a FR.
That's all that was needed from Jordan on that team though. I'm sure he could have scored 20+ if we needed him too, but there were so many other options on that team. There was no need for him to be a big time scorer.

How about a little more love for the 1993 team? Three 7-footers in Montross, Salvadori and Wenstrom. 6 Burger Boys, The Donald was just on FIRE the entire tournament. Phelps, Reese, Dante Calabria and one of my all-time favorites in George Lynch. Not to mention Dean, Gut and Phil Ford on the sideline. That was a great team

Man, I think a battle between 05 and 09 would be amazing and I'm not convinced that 09 would run away or win that matchup necessarily.

Felton vs Lawson
McCants vs Weezy
May vs Tyler
Jawad vs Deon
Jackie vs Ginyard
Marvin vs Ed Davis
Noel vs Danny Green

That would be an exciting matchup to watch in a 7 game series!!

They all have their special place for me. I never saw the 1957 team (way before my time).

I will say that the 2009 team, and their tournament run, were- without a doubt- the least stressful of any tournament-winning UNC team. They burned through that tournament. It was a shame they lost the ACCT that year. The 2008 team was amazing as well... until Kansas.

2005 is being underrated big time.

I think they handle 2009 any day of the week and 2017.

They were more skilled in the front court. With Marvin, Jawad and May.

Will never forget their win at UCONN on the road.

I'm right there with you. I think '05 is a much tougher group as a whole to be honest, minus Tyler of course. There were a lot of bulldogs on the '05 team!

Where do you get that JJ wasn't a superstar?

Younger posters? Heh, that was 60 years ago! You don't have to be all that young to have not seen them! ;)

I'll give you one that'll shock you. I never saw the '05 or '09 teams play, and I'm 28 years old. Wasn't really a college basketball fan until college (grew up in CA and few people follow college sports there unless they went to a Pac-12 school), and wasn't a UNC fan until last year when I got in here for grad school.

I never said he wasn't a "superstar" but I didnt say any were any on the 93 team either. I did say that team was full of hard workers, just like the current team. If I were to try and compare JJ to another player from the 93 team it would be George Lynch. He was no nonsense, hard nosed defensive player who got you the points any way he could when needed. He had the ability to become a man among men, just like JJ. However when one looks back at 2017 there wasnt a "true" Jordan, Rosenbluth, Hansbrough, May, etc etc. Thats all Im saying. Its just my opinion and nothing more. This team reminds me of 93 much more than the other teams is all. Now 05 and 09 teams are very similar and I would love to see those guys in their prime play a 7 game series. I have to say I would have to pick the 05 team in 7. What say you.

Superstar is very subjective and in my opinion there are some years when there isn't a single one in college ball. So who was a superstar in CB this year? I personally didn't see a single one. I love Justin , but he isn't a superstar.

Tell me who is the superstar(s) on this list? Note: Kennedy #47, Isaiah #39 , Berry #27 and Justin #15. Y'all gonna love #1.

That was hilarious.

Puh-freakin'-lease!

Obviously a preseason list but I still have to laugh at some of the picks. I would love to see them compose another list, now that the season is over. I think it would be radically different.

The point isn't really the crazy ratings , it's more the fact that there isn't a superstar on the list.

A true Jordan? Jordan wasn't a true Jordan at that point. James Worthy was easily the best player on the team and it wasn't even close. Without Worthy, that team wouldn't be remembered at all

I agree, many bad picks no matter when it was put together.
