It's that time of year again when I have to decide which service to sign up with. I generally sign up shortly before the first game and keep the service through the NCAA championship.

I've used Sling TV for the last couple of years because it was the cheapest plan that gave me nearly all the games (all but a couple that were blacked out).

But a recent bad experience with Sling's customer support has made me open to a change.

So . . . what do you guys like?

Is YouTube TV good enough to warrant the high price? And if you are going to pay that much, why not just get regular cable?

Has Hulu Live ever fixed their video problems?

Are Sony Vue and Direct TV still around?

Do all the services now include both ACCN and ACCNX?

There is this new thing called "Cable" TV and it seems to have all the channels! It might just catch on!

Seriously though, I'm planning to attend most of our home games in person this year. Might go back to Season Tix as soon as I find the best hookup, lol!

Cable is pretty expensive - although maybe not that much more than the also-expensive offerings like YouTube TV or Hulu Live. Does the basic cable that gives you all the ESPN channels also give you ACCN and ACCNX? How about the BTN or SEC or other sports venues?

One site pegs those 2 streamers at $65/mo. And DTV Stream (which apparently replaced Direct TV) will cost you $85 if you want ACCN.

At those prices, traditional cable might be back in the running. When I jumped on cable for a month to watch the Olympics, it cost me around $75.

It's starting to sound like I need to work out my annoyance with Sling. It's only $46/mo.

No as to ACCN. I was "grandfathered" in to ACCN by my cable provider but fire stick and hulu look a whole lot more affordable than cable as they always go up over time and the hulu's or sling's of the world give ACCN as part of subscription.

Sling's customer service sux for sure, but it's still the best deal out there.

I'm Old fashioned and can't shake the fear of cutting the cord! I have freakin cable AND Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, ESPN+ and HBO Max, lol! Most of the streaming services I get through my cellphone though. I just don't want to relearn how to watch TV, lol!

We just got rid of our landline last year!

You're not factoring in the contract when comparing streaming to cable. I have YouTube TV and I can cancel anytime I want. Can't do that with traditional providers unless something has changed since I last had them. You probably aren't factoring in things like extra fees and taxes as well. That $10 difference ends up being a lot more when you factor in that stuff.

YouTube tv - I get it November-April
- cancel anytime
- unlimited DVR
- DVR stays after you cancel for if you renew again

I have Youtube TV also. I love it and $65 a month is not terrible compared to the $200 I was paying for DirecTv.

I have been using Hulu Live for the past few years, used slingtv before that. Cancel it for the summer May-August and sign back up early Sept for football and bball.

You guys must not have a TV addiction like my whole household does! We have a TV on in almost every room the entire time we are home, lol! There is no way I could survive for months without service!

Tar Heels, Coffee, and TV are the stuff of life! (OK beer too)

Kind of a tangent here. I wish someone would come up with a sports TV streaming service for a decent price. Something with all the ESPN channels, Fox, etc. That would work out perfect for me, because everything else my family watches is on one of the 500 streaming services I have. Any money I've saved on cable is now going to streaming services.

Good thread.

I use Sling TV for the basketball season only and cancel after the season. I just renewed for $46 a month, but the first month is only $10.

I also have Comcast cable which I have had for years with the extra packages, i.e. Tennis channel, ESPN Red Zone, Paramount +.

It really depends on your interests. I can't do without NFL Red Zone, which I consider the best feature ever developed on cable if you are a big NFL fan.

This is the deal I was trying to push through. I'd get to the last page, hit the confirm button, and it wouldn't take.

After many failures - turning off all ad-blockers, using different browsers - I contacted their support. Days between emails, and then they stopped responding without ever getting it to work.

Cable and the more expensive services offer lots more channels, but I'm just doing this for basketball.

I spend the rest of the money I save on extra streaming services (over and above Netflix and Prime), like HBO and Apple TV+.

Try a different email address. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Yep. That's going to be my next step. Set up a new account. I'm planning to wait until Nov 5. That way 5 months of Sling will carry me through the NCAA championship game. Plus, if I run into problems, I still have a couple of days before the first UNC game.

I notice most of these streaming services only give you a 7-day free trial, if that. Makes sense. Otherwise, someone might be able to get through the whole season for free just by doing consecutive 1-month free trials with different services.

You really don't need Sling once the regular season is over because all the games after that (including the ACC tournament) are covered on ESPN and/or the national channels. ESPN has a partnership with most of the cable companies. They also have an agreement with the ACC network, but the games are blocked during the regular season. I don't think Sling has broadcast rights after the regular season.

I still need Sling for ESPN. Unlike some, I don't have the cable package that gives me ESPN.

ESPN should sell its own service. Sort of like HBO does. I'd buy that (assuming it includes ACCN and ACCNX). Don't really need any of the other channels.

Sadly, my family members aren't looking to economize. They cheerfully pay top cable prices. Hard for me to understand, but they won't even think about a change.

This year I have had Charter/spectrum internet + TV silver for $139.91. In Asheville Get all the March madness channels. I on a package, but a few years back Charter/spectrum wanted $169+ for the same package and I went wit their internet $75 + Hulu extras for $59. If Spectrum wants to bump me up next year, its back to their internet plus Hulu. Why charter spectrum, I leave in a condo at the Cloisters near the Muni Gulf course and its a charter.spectrum lock for internet. All the prices are monthly charges.

Guys I have an awesome deal, I sell IPTV service, my plans are half the price of youtube, and even more over other iptv services. Monthly 30, Three months for 80, 140 for 6months, 220 for a years. Stable IPTV service, with 99 percent uptime. I haven't missed a UNC football game, a football game, a NBA game, or a hockey game I wanted to watch. All the sports channels, all the cable channels, all the premium channel. Most of everything that Netflix, Discovery +, Disney or Amazon Prime offers. Hit me up with a message, and Ill give you my number to talk about it!!! Plus up to 5 devices and 2 different ips at onetime. 30 dollars a month, TRY it out I can almost guarantee you'll get your moneys worth. Small print most have internet, 15 megs or better for optimum service, but does run smoothly on apple and android devices!

Well, you prompted me to read up on IPTV services. While some are legit, many aren't. Obviously it would be silly of me to merely ask if yours is one of the legit ones. Do you have any way to establish your bona fides?

In NC all iptv are legit, meaning completely legal. Among some of my customers are cops, deputy's and even a few attorneys, and a superior court judge, like I said I can offer you a free two day trial with no string attached. I at first was very skeptical, but I've been using the service for the last 6 months, and I love it, if I wasn't selling the service, I would still promote it. Do the cable operators like it? No why would they, they want everybody using their service. But for cord cutters and those that want more control over their bills, is a very legit option. in the 6 months I have the service, I've maybe lost one hour of viewing time, and my tv run 24/7. When I was with charter, I would have several hours a month where I couldn't watch because their feed was out. In IPTV you have tiers, of course, top tier are services offered by cable providers, second tier is sling, YouTube, and hulu and others like that, next is where my service fit in, offering most all available channels, with a tv guide very organized, with high uptime, most Iptv in this tier offer between 2000-4000 channels with most channels in their native resolution that the are broadcast in, the last tier is the least stable iptv's, the substitute quality for quantity, the promote between 5000 and 15000 channels, often at a very low rate, with the amount of channels the offer many are in SD or at the most low quality HD. these IPTV require even higher bandwidths and most likely will not run on your cell phone.

Must be getting close to the "End Times" -- I am agreeing with @Steat

Sling is the best bang for the buck IMHO. As Steat mentioned, the best part is you can sign-up whenever and cancel whenever.

Cable as we know it, is about to go the way of the dinosaur. My local cable company just south of Charlotte is doing away with cable and going streaming altogether at the end of the year. This will happen with all of them as they don't have to worry about hardware and can lay off most of the service folks. Within two years I doubt there will be a true cable system left anywhere

So what happens to the surviving dinosaurs??? Do we have to find swamps like the alligators or live on remote islands like Komodo Dragons???

My cord gives me comfort! Keep your laws off my cord! My cord, my choice!

Yep, my company Comporium, is in the final days of true cable. Have talked to some folks that have already switched to their streaming. They are looking for other alternatives as they say it is a joke as every time you change channels it takes about 20 seconds to buffer. But if these cable companies don't put the best product out there, they will cease to exist altogether as fold opt for YouTubeTV, etc.

Sounds like the folks you talk to have really bad internet. Maybe they should upgrade from dial up.
