Hubert says changes to coaching staff coming

I haven’t seen or heard the episode. My first thoughts on this is Hubert has security for next season. And also, this might be the beginning of a game of deflecting some blame too.
I will of course me interested if this means there will be 20 former UNC players/coaches on his staff next season.
But that’s probably not right for me to assume without knowing the full context.

I agree this move is nothing more than a deflection into saving his job for another year or 2. All that back room bullshit doesn't change the fact that he is getting worse this year with this team. There are a few player that have improved or are improving but the team isn't and that's the issue.
I feel like EC is better this year than last year in the terms of playing PG but his shot hasn't improved.
Trimble is probably them most improved his shot his defense and his game all around.
Ian is getting better because he is getting minutes, and he is naturally talented.
RJ is RJ nothing more to say he has to be in the perfect system with the prefect scheme and teammates to be great.
Washington and Withers still suck.
But the biggest issue is they don't know how to get the best out of what they have available. There are chemistry issues, and they are lost as a staff.
Completely agree. He should have admitted some fault or error in not recognizing these issues when other schools have already been doing it. He has been around the college basketball landscape for over 20 years and is just seeing how things should work?
Belichick has never been around college football but one of the first things he does is get a program GM in place.
Hubert's comments tell me he knows he is safe for this year but the product on the court better improve. I do not doubt his love for UNC or that he is a good man, but he does not seem able to accept blame.
So honestly does this change anything? Better coaching, better recruits, better transfers or anything? I’m sure it will be another Carolina guy too (which may or may not be bad) but that’s a no brainer.
I’m sure it will at the least buy him one more year. I’m not sure what the answer is I just know I’m sick of the product being paraded out every game and the last couple of years. Whatever needs to be done then do it. I have my opinion but it’s about as useful as anyone else’s which is not much in the grand scheme of it all. Tired of being the punchline and punching bag especially to inferior competition. Get back to being Carolina basketball that we love.

Yep my exact thought, you dont make those kind of comments unless your pretty positive you are coming back. Not for nothing for as bad as HD has been, how does Bubba get a pass as well???? Isint it his job to put people in successful positions and help them how the hell was he so far behind the 8 ball on the business aspect of all of this
I think BEST case scenario and who knows how it will play out. But best case is, one you hire a GM to get in front of all this you also hopefully pick the brain of lombardi and bellicheck as they are going through this now. , you also force HD to bring in a couple former high level coaches on staff that help with X and Os and Third I think its fair to say Hubert is a pretty good recruiter, you let him be the recruiter with the NIL backing to keep us competitive. If you get all 3 of those things, then you go in next year. and you take away every danm excuse possible from HD and you say to him, sink or swim this is the year.
This is nothing but a bandaid….He was getting 1 more year no matter what…Next year is it and I mean he has to win big….I don’t see it and really feel the bottom will fall out…Just fire him and be done with it or better yet Hubert should just step down and say he is not the man for the job…

I mostly agree. I don't think Drake was leaving after this year anyway, which is good news obviously. I really love that kid's potential.
It is disheartening to hear Hubert say these things he needed to say upon being hired. I suspect that he felt he could handle all these duties himself (or was oblivious to the need of these duties) and now that the team sucks, he's acting like it's because he's been wearing too many hats.
I think the Caleb Wilson commitment bought him another year with the agreement to expand the staff of the program. So in that vein, we can only hope that we hit a homerun with the hire of a GM. Is that a Bubba hire or a Hubert hire? Frankly, I'm not confident in either one of them.
So, will Hubert be reporting to the GM? It seems like college coaches are the CEO and board of directors all in one and the GM is just an overseeing role. Unlike in pro sports where the head coach reports directly to the GM. I can't imagine that Bill Belichick is reporting to Michael Lombardi, for instance.
I also found it interesting during the show, Hubert specifically said they run secondary break on virtually every play that doesn't get a shot up from their primary break. Take that for what you will.
Big picture, it seems like UNC basketball is throwing random stuff at the wall. And what elements of traditional UNC basketball will or will not change. Starting to pick and choose what you're trying to hold on to. For me, kind of dangerous and you risk always being behind. But I understand that there's a large segment of the fanbase that likes UNC for what it has always been.

Problem is he is not a lead dog PG like we have had in the past…Dude is soft and lazy with the basketball….And acts like a child most of the time…1st 9 turnovers at dook the other night he had 5….
He has been a disappointment when you consider he was supposed to be a generational Talent…Once again Hubert went after the wrong guy…Tahaad Pettiford was the guy….
Mandella effect on display! In my reality Hubert is in year 4 right now, 5yrs ago Roy Williams was our coach.
Look how things have changed since Hubert took the job. When he first was named head coach, schools were not supposed to be a part of NIL, NIL was supposed to be about commercial deals outside of the school, not the direct pay for play it has become. Early on Hubert did not, don't think he was allowed to discuss NIL, all he was allowed to do was refer the player to admin that had a list of NCAA approved agents.
Had I or any one else told you 5years ago that UNC needed a GM for football and another GM for basketball you would have told me I was out of my mind, same thing I would have told anyone telling me the same thing. Now, there are what, 10 or so programs, now including UNC that has or has now committed to a separate GM for both football and basketball? There are how many NCAA school out there, looks like maybe we are more on the leading edge than miles behind?
You need tacticians and evaluators in the modern game. Not relationship guys. Hubert is a relationship guy, Cal is a relationship guy. Nate Oats hired Brian Adams as an assistant this year. Adams runs the defense. Watch their games and you see him out calling the defense and in the huddle jumping in re: defensive stuff. The guy has worked in the professional ranks since 2014 and started his career in the nba as a video coordinator. These are the type of people coaches are hiring as well. DO NOT tell me that is Pat Sullivan. Look at Tennessee, Gregg Polinsky - he’s listed as an assistant but he is there defacto GM is my understanding and he runs their player personnel (worked in PP for a two decades in the nba) - identified Knecht is their guy regarding talent acquisition and roster construction.
I only see Lebo and May talk to the players and Hubert during timeouts. You don't see them yelling out during the game since Hubert is patrolling the sidelines. My high school classmate is on the Oregon staff and he gets to speak out during the game as an assistant.
They want to keep the GM position in the family. So the old Carolina model doesn’t work for the staff size. But they still want to hire only the best Tar Heel for the job? Got it.

Carolina just might be the most nepotistic program in the country. It’s hard to fathom really. I can’t imagine continuing to build out the staff with Carolina only guys… how well has that worked so far?
Mike Schmitz - I wrote this in another thread Yes, he was one of the names I was told were interviewing. I will promise that Buzz is consulting on the hire - he will NOT be the GM. Buzz is categorically not the guy for the position. Michael Jordan is a fiercely loyal person - that is why Buzz worked in the front office for the Hornets. The Hornets had the smallest scouting department in the NBA. It was a joke.
Bubba is not an alumni. Being an alumni should not be a "foot in the door" or resumé builder for a GM job (or really any university position). That's great that you have something that may be evidence that you're loyal or that would support your claim that you would love the opportunity, but what are your qualifications? Tell me about the previous experiences, namely successes and conquering of challenges, that you have had in similar roles before.
The competition for these roles need to be sky high. AD Cunningham's job is way too easy if you're going to limit him to a small pool of candidates.
