Payton decommitted and I think it would be quite lucky to wind up with Dax.

Who else is on the radar?

I'm guessing Andre Smith graduates next yr even though he'll only be a RS Jr, so we badly need one or two LBs if Payton isn't coming.

I hate we have lost Payton Wilson, but his comments show that football environment does matter to these kids. Of course he should have known our lack of butts in the seats before he even committed.

Not sure he was referring to the stadium....

Andre Smith never redshirted.

did he get hurt in the 2nd or 3rd game? does that even matter for a medical redshirt? not sure of those rules

Yes it matters. Generally, players do not seek a medical redshirt until they have to (i.e. Smith wouldn't do it this year).
I'd assume he'd do it in case he'd like 5 yrs of scholarship to hone is skills, nail down his degrees, etc.

isn't there a max number of games you can play in and still be eligible for a redshirt? i don't know any of the rules around redshirts

for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

thanks blazers, smith seems to meet all these. so maybe we have him for 2 more years?

yes, unless he wants to take his degree and move on or submit for nfl draft, etc. I kinda bet the latter occurs, but it would be pretty awesome if he wanted to play that 5th yr. That type of luck doesn't happen to unc though ;)

If he was a real man, he'd want to help put more butts in the seats with his play on the field. But he's a smart-azz punk who deserves mooo. F him.

As a Pack fan, I fully understand and appreciate the frustration associated with Payton’s flip, but that’s beyond harsh.

Will the NFL draft him next year, say by Round 4? If so, don't count on him in Carolina Blue for a 5th year.

Almost all guys who can be drafted after 4 years will go NFL. The days are gone when you could redshirt NFL talent and have it on campus as 5th year Seniors.

Things are a little different but there are still tons of mj Stewart types.

And Andre could very well be one of them. A lot of these guys realize that playing in carolina blue will be/could be the highlight of their lives

The flip, and who it was to, was going to rub people the wrong way. The way he did it, his actions and comments from start to finish just guaranteed that he will forever been seen as a lying little punk who did what he did with malice aforethought.
