I remember exactly where I was when...

- the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded
Wasn't alive. (Yes, please take a moment to feel old).

- O.J.'s white bronco chase
I was like 3, so I was probably watching Power Rangers

- the towers collapsed on 9/11
I was in sixth grade social studies. Mercifully, my school wasn't run by a bunch of PC yuppies, so my teacher cancelled the lesson for today and let us watch the news for all 50 minutes, simply saying "kids, this is history unfolding right now that you need to see for yourselves."

Whaddya got?
Space Shuttle Challenger exploded: My mother's womb

O.J.'s white bronco chase: We were watching it during class in 4th grade...maybe that was the verdict, I can't remember.

9/11: 10th grade accounting class

My principal gave instructions to our teachers to not let us watch the news. My response was something along the lines of " I don't give a f**k what you say" and then I proceeded to turn on the TV.

Yeah it enrages me when I hear stories about how schools decided to not let kids watch the news. It's the most important American event that's happened in my lifetime....I'd be damned if I wasn't going to watch.

That being said, I didn't grasp the magnitude of it right away because....as an 11-year-old in Georgia, I didn't even know what the heck the World Trade Centers were.

I was in 5th grade when Challenger blew up. We always used to take class time to roll the TV in on the roll cart and watch whenever they did a space shuttle launch. This one didn't go as the teachers had expected.

I was watching the Knicks/Rockets NBA Championship when they interrupted the game to give us the news on OJ in the Bronco. My parents were out of town and I was having people over to my house. My parents were in Houston for the wedding of my cousin that lived in L.A. I always thought that was kind of a weird connection to the whole night.

I was in charge of the United Way Day of Caring on September 11th, 2001 at a place called Carolina Youth Development Center. I had roughly 40-50 volunteers on site that day participating in numerous projects. When it all went down, I had to go and tell all these volunteers what happened and that "Day of Caring" would be cancelled and to go home.

I was in first year of college when I melted down at the sight of Bill Curley and Danya Abrams having the games of their lives and our ridiculously talented Tar Heels choking on a golden opportunity to win back-to-back titles. But thank God for Scotty Thurman.

I found this to be extremely funny.
Maybe so, but I absolutely knew one of us Gen Xers was going to make the reference. It was a thing, okay? LOL.

Danya Abrams
F*** that guy. I'll never forgive him for undercutting Derrick Phelps and taking him out of the game. That team wouldn't have won a championship anyway. As talented as they were, the McGinnis/Stackhouse/Wallace trio was bad for team chemistry and it showed all season.

There are a number of reasons, and a couple of really good teams that came close and could have won but didn't. For one thing, for a significant portion of Dean's career the tourney was smaller and it was harder to get in.

In full disclosure the TV cart was used when I was in school too. However, once I graduated to second grade we stopped using it.

I was in Anatomy and Physiology class in the 10th grade. We watched the launch that day because they were so important back then. And I mean you could hear a pin drop in there when that went down.

- O.J.'s white bronco chase

I was in Hawaii and we were watching the Knicks/Rockets game in my friends apartment. We were very drunk and very entertained.

- the towers collapsed on 9/11

It was the 2nd day on my new job. I lived in Atlanta and worked for Hewitt Associates, right beside the HP building near the perimeter mall. A guy from the floor above us came running down telling us about the first plane hitting the tower. I think all 14 floors that we occupied were all crammed into the command center on the 4th floor watching it on one of the several big screens we had. It was a surreal, almost numbing scene to stand there and watch. I took in a few minutes of it and then like everyone else, began thinking of my family and their safety. No one knew what was going on. My wife just had our first child one month earlier so for me, it was a no-brainer. I went straight home, hugged them as tight as I could, and got in touch with the rest of my people.

Wasn't around for the Challenger explosion. I was 6 during the Bronco chase - I think I vaguely remember watching some of it on TV at my house, but didn't really recollect what was going on. 8th grade spanish class for 9/11.

I also remember exactly where I was for the Boston Marathon Bombing a few years ago - I'm sure there are some other moments I could tell you exactly where I was, but would probably need to be prompted on the event.

Seriously, how did we only win two championships under Dean? I'm too young to know. Seems like we wasted a lotttttttttttt of chances.
I could take an hour to tell you......... We were always flat as road kill in the 1st round and back in the day they could be tough games. UCLA ruled for the 1st few years and everybody else played for 2nd. We had injuries at the worst possible times. We had a handful of head scratchers as in HTF did we lose that game. A couple that I blamed on the 4 corners especially when we went to it way too damn early. I have always been of the opinion that Dean was the X's and O's tactical genius but wasn't a great motivator. His teams would run off the court after victories with very little celebration.

IMO, Roy's UNC career is better than Dean's. It would've been ironclad if we had beat 'Nova.

ETA: JuleZ, stop, wait. I forgot to put this disclaimer on my post. Roy's career is better than Dean's, based strictly on performance and if you disregard intangible things like Dean's "impact" on the program.

You're comparing apples and emus.

Dean built the program; Roy has done a tremendous job of rehabbing and continuing the legacy. The game, the sports landscape, the culture, all of that is worlds different than it was when Dean started, and even when he retired. Some of that is actually due to Dean's own innovations and practices. Dean was arguably the greatest coach and leader in the history of college basketball. There is no one I'd rather have coaching the Heels right now than Roy, but Ol' Roy would be the first to tell you he's no Dean.

I guess the real test (that we'll obviously never know) is whether Dean would have let Ingram (and pretty much directly correlated: the 2016 national championship) slip away from him. If not, he's better than Roy. If so, then I guess he's no better than Roy.

Dean never had Cal or the OAD Krshewski to deal with in recruiting. The Pros loved Dean Smith coached players.

I was a senior in high school... don't remember it at all.

- O.J.'s white bronco chase
I was setting up my band's sound system for a gig that night. The bar had a huge TV set up next to the stage and everyone was glued to the broadcast... except me.

- the towers collapsed on 9/11
I was asleep and a buddy called me to turn on the TV. About 2 minutes after I turned it on, the first one fell. I turned it off and took a shower. Later that day I bought about 10 guitars from a guy who was selling his collection, and his TV was on full-blast, and that's when I saw WTC7 fall. That guy was in shock. I got a better price than I expected cuz he was barely paying attention to the deal, and obsessed with the TV. He was convinced we would be under martial law and wanted some cash. He was in Armageddon mode. It was an awesome collection, too. 6 Gibson Les Pauls, an old Dan Armstrong Plexi, 2 Gibson acoustics and an original Coral Sitar. SCORE!

You must not do too well in "current events" discussions, huh?

You either don't remember or don't pay attention to big events as they happen.
I remembered where I was when those two things happened. The OP asked if I can remember where I was. I wasn't immersed in it at that moment. But, like everyone, I was forever changed by 9/11. OJ's case didn't matter m6ch to me, personally.

Right, and that's cool that you can remember where you were I guess. I was more referring to the parts where you stated that you weren't watching the TV for OJ, were showering and shopping instead of watching the events of 9/11, and didn't remember anything about the Challenger explosion.

Since it's clear you didn't really follow any of those stories as they were unfolding - I can't imagine you could have answered too many questions correctly about them in the moment, as a current events discussion. Not that I really care at all - I was just making an observation.

I would add the announcement that susan smith had been arrested for drowning her kids. I was living in the upstate managing a crew that installed office systems. We were all news junkies and had been following the story for days on local talk radio. Nobody saw her arrest coming. We were at the greenville mem hospital and all stopped working along with the hospital people and watched the presser on tv. People were gasping in shock. A couple women started crying. Heartbreaking to imagine those kids final moments

I guess I wasn't as clear about the 9/11 thing. I wasn't "shopping." That was a very expensive business transaction. That's part of what I do- I buy and resell. I showered because I knew I had to be at this man's house that afternoon in Newberry, SC. I was aware of what was going on and I knew it was going to be a lingering event. 9/11 wasn't really just a one-day event. If you knew where you were when Kennedy was shot, you may not have been where you could watch coverage, but you were affected by it. As far as "answering questions correctly", I dunno. I don't know that anyone could have answered too much because it had just happened. I could have answered that the Twin Towers had fallen, and WtC7 had fallen! And, I knew there had been multiple attacks. I just had business that I had to take care of that afternoon. I knew there would be plenty of time to get details... and there was. Again, with OJ, I wasn't really that concerned.
