I still hate Christian Laettner!

Just watched the 30 for 30 on espn about Laettner. He is by far the biggest prick to ever play college basketball.
After watching, now my kids hate Laettner as they were not alive during his time at dook. We now also hate Laettners family
And we really still hate coach crysexski!

We watched it too. My youngest son (15 and plays football, basketball and baseball in HS) didn't know who he was and set the DVR unbeknownst to us. Well when it came on I had to watch. He seemed to finally understand why I loathe everything dook.

There were a couple of interesting observations about this I made. First, in it someone said that people tune it to watch dook for one of two reasons. Because the love them or because they hate them. Either way they tune in. I thought about DESPN airing this now and realized he was right. They want to remind people how much some hate dook and what better way to get people to tune in to the program that to air it with the NCAA tournament on everyone's mind.

Second observation was about the rumor of Laettner and Brian Davis. They touched on it and when they moved on my wife looks at me and says "They never denied it!" She was right. The only thing either did to attempt to dispel the rumor was mention their respective families at the very end of the program. Not once did either say it wasn't true. Makes one wonder.....

Final observation was with the Fab Five. I remember the special they did on those arseholes and Rose saying more than once that they still don't think they lost the NC game to us. Well, sorry jackoff, but you did. In this one they talked about "hating" Laettner and dook, but they also respected them and him. So they got beat by both teams, Laetttner talked all kinds of ish to them and about them and yet they "respect" dook but think they beat us and just happened to "lose" on a fluke. Just solidified them as the solid #2 on my all time teams to despise.

After it was over all I could think about what what several people said repeatedly, especially about Laettner's stomp. There are a different set of rules for dook than the rest of the teams out there. Rose was right about one thing when he said had it been one of the fab five that did that, they would still be on probation, yet Laettner got a technical and kept playing, going 10 for 10 from the field and at the FT line, including the game winner that we all get to see over and over every year. Like someone said in this program, he shouldn't have even been in the game to make that shot, and yet he was.

Funny how the same things we have complained about with dook getting calls has been going on for 30 years now and still nothing is done about it.

Had he played at UNC you guys would have a man crush on him and complaining about how his sexual orientation did not matter. As a Tar Heel fan what concerns me more is the decline of all things Carolina ! Basketball team continues with double digit loss seasons , maybe we start becoming a NIT fixture like NC STATE , Football team sucks and the baseball team is 12-7 I believe. Maybe Roy should bring in some big men like him that could should the rock out to the 3pt line.

Roy can't do anything until this scandal finally goes away,he has lost some really good recruits because of it.It doesn't help what other coaches are telling these kids about this mess either....Be thankful that ole Roy hasn't said screw it and retired.

Something the 30 for 30 didn't talk about (unless I missed it), was how Laettner and Brian Davis
cheated/swindled folks out of their money in bad land deals. You can Google Laettner/Davis-
bad land deals and read for a while of who they owe and cases against them. I bet even
Johnny Dawkins wouldn't have a kind word about this pair after they stole money from him.

I almost spit out my coffee when I read someone said his "blue collar" family. I grew up in the same city has him (Buffalo, NY). Dude went to the most expensive private school his whole life before Duke.

Can't stand Duke & K but I thought the show was pretty good. Hate him or not, the guy went to 4 final 4's and won 2 titles. The one thing that stuck out to me was how unprofessionally Brian Davis presented himself. How many F*** bombs did he drop? He didn't complete a sentence without it getting bleeped. I have never seen an interview of a current or ex Tarheel cursing through an interview like Davis did.

Sorry, I beg to differ. There have been plenty of guys at UNC who were head cases or did things that I shook my head over and not one of them is someone I would defend if they EVER did anything close to what that jackass did multiple times. He kicked, stomped, shoved, elbowed and was one of the dirtiest players to have ever played the game. If you look at all the guys UNC has had come through the program you cannot name a single guy who ever did anything like Laettner did. Not Rasheed, not Rashad, not Shammond, not anyone. Rasheed was a hard nosed player who was as intense as they come, but he never stomped on a guy. He never elbowed someone in the face who was coming across the lane. And the thing is Laettner was good enough he didn't HAVE to do those things. He just did it because he liked it and knew he could get away with it.

Oh, and I don't give three shiites if he and Brian Davis ever swapped spit in the shower or worse. Won't change my opinion of either one. All I was saying is to feign "hurt feelings" over that rumor like they did on camera it seems like SOMEONE would have simply said it wasn't true. I just found it interesting, that's all.

And I, too, was shocked at Davis' interviews. I am sure K was quite proud of his camera time, though, so I guess that is all that matters in the end.

If anything that program just solidified my disdain for all things dook. K has built that program around the "us against them" mentality and fostered that belief that they only hate dook because dook wins. No, people hate dook because they epitomize every stereotype of the narcissitic, pompous, frat boys attending some private bastion of elitism who think they are better than everyone else and bask in the knowledge that they are able to get away with things no one else is.

But, enjoy it while you can. I have always said the thing about K and his narcissism is that it leaves no room for anyone to come close to accomplishing what he has. No matter who they get to replace him he has sown the seeds to ensure they will never achieve what he did at dook. I would bet that not 10 years after he is gone dook will be relegated to middle of the pack ACC finishes and more NIT bids than NCAA bids. And when the nerds stop camping out to see them play, what then?

I watched most of it. I know it was a college-based documentary, but trust me they could've easily filled another hour on hate for CL with:

1) his role on Minnesota Timberwolves (I am from Mpls, everyone here has a special hate for him, based on his time here). Called basically all the players losers to their face. Nice teambuilding there, chump!

2) more on how he got selected to the Dream Team, and how he had zero business being on that team, as the only college player, with other college players being more deserving, not to mention several NBA players who were snubbed

3) the whole land / financing scandal swindle I forgot, but others had mentioned

A jerk throughout his life. I frankly don't care if he's changed, and it bothers me that he seeks and gets attention like this for being the center of justified "dislike". Its as if he thinks its cute, funny, something he's accomplished, worthy of pride.

I thought the doc was pretty good personally. Although if I was a fan of another team, I could easily see myself not liking him lol. But the guy was a beast on the court and is EASILY a top 10 college player of ALL time. Which is why I quoted Heelicious. I'm not here to argue your points 1 and 3. Don't know enough about either situation to really go one way or the other.

But I must ask. What college player was "more deserving" than a guy with 4 Final Fours and Back to Back titles? Not to mention the personal accolades he had to go along with those Final Fours/ Nat Titles.

With this alleged Cloud over our head I think hes been doing a pretty good job recruiting. The guys been the to the ACC championship game 5 of the last 6 seasons. Won a couple Regular season titles. Final 4 in 2012. God this is a what have you done for me lately world we live in today huh? I mean I don't see people calling for Cal's head and hating on him. They didn't even go to the tournament last year.

In refrence to #2, I've never agreed with this.


The only person who was ever in the conversation with him was Shaq. But Laettner at the time was pretty much one of the 5 best players in college basketball history. It seems weird to say now, but he legitimately was THAT good, and was easily the most decorated.

His game never translated to the NBA, like most Duke players before the last decade or so. At the time, Christian Laettner was an overall better basketball player than Shaquille O'Neal. Shaq was raw, but unpolished, he honestly may have not fared well against those European teams and their stretch bigs.


In reference to Laettner in general, he kinda was always seen as just a fake tough guy. Trying to overcompensate for being the lanky white dude, by doing douchey, ticky tack, cheap shit on the court. That's why I hated him, and why I hate guys like Birdman in the NBA, and why I hate KG as well, they just generally evoke a sense of douchebaggery into the arena when they step on the court.

I said "Go Heels" and she said "Heel Yeah!!"

Excellent point donapache. I agree. I think Laettner still has pending litigation due to
swindling people in land deals. I wouldn't want one red cent of mine going to defend
this worthless piece of garbage.

He was and still is the most smug, insufferable arse to ever put on a basketball uniform. He would never have made it at UNC because our coach was a REAL leader of men. Coach ratty not only allowed him to behave like a spoiled child, he encouraged it.....AND made it one of the defining aspects of his teams from that day forward . Every team since has had one of those punks who excel at dirty tactics and whine constantly and never get penalized because refs get butt cramped when faced with a rabid rat!
