If you could live anywhere

Duplin County, N.C. Less than two hours from Chapel Hill (for sporting events), 1000+ acres of family land I can squat on, 75 minutes from the coast, 90 minutes to RDU so I can travel wherever, and the best part.... I wouldn't have to see or talk to anyone on a daily basis.

For work, I'd just gamble online.

Damn tough question.

Maybe Telluride or Steamboat Springs, CO? Maybe Chapel Hill? I would retire but definitely not sit on the couch.

Colorado definitely has all the activities I would want, other than attending events in Chapel Hill. Also much closer to family and friends in Chapel Hill.

Ultimately it would depend in my disposable income.

Like 71 said, damn tough question. I'd probably say somewhere on the North Carolina coast. I love Wrightsville Beach, but wouldn't rule out Ocean Isle or Sunset. I would want to be within a reasonable driving distance of Chapel Hill, so that rules out South Carolina beaches pretty much for me, even though some of them are awesome. As some of you know, I love the Pamlico River near Little Washington too, so I wouldn't rule that out either. Damn good question!

I've typed and deleted my answer three times now. Great question.

I think it would be cool to live abroad, maybe in an English-speaking country to lessen the culture shock. The UK, South Africa, and New Zealand are all possibilities, but ultimately I might go with Australia just for its size and geographic diversity. In a perfect world, I'd love to buy an RV and spend years traveling the continent while I'm still young enough and healthy enough to be that far away from my family and support network. Of course I'd love to do the same thing in North America as well, but that can wait until I'm a little bit older.

Honestly I would live right where I am now. Lived I. Charlotte for 15 years but moved back to Greenville SC in 2000 because it's my favorite place. Bunch of close friends, family and a great place. Traveled the country for years with UPS and FedeEx but my heart was always here.

You can do a whole lot worse than Upsate SC, that's for sure. Great place to raise a family, your dollar goes a long way there, it aligns with your and my political and religious beliefs by and large, and it's an easy drive from bigger cities with more to offer like Atlanta and Charlotte. Plus, only 4.25 hours from Chapel Hill, which is nice.

(yes, I've made the Atlanta --> Chapel Hill drive so many times that I know the driving distance in hours from basically anywhere along I-85 to Chapel Hill by heart)

Exactly brother, although our tailgate is 222 miles from my driveway I made good time on Saturday morning when I had season tickets I wound be there in 3 to 3 1/2 hours max.

Hvar island in Croatia is about the most beautiful place on earth, IMO. Spent a month R&R there during the Bosnian mess and just fell in love with the place. The Adriatic is calm and serene, and the laid-back life style is just perfect for chillin'. Temperate climate, great food, friendly people and the scenery is unreal. I could see myself wasting away there very easily.

I agree Croatia is wonderful and beautiful country. My wife and I were lucky enough to visit it before it was discovered by the rest of the world.

Threads like this, and just thinking about where I want to end up in general, always remind me of the Delmar O'Donnell quote in O Brother, Where Art Thou?:

"You ain't no kind of man if you ain't got land."

I'm also happy where I'm at.....living on my in-law's tobacco farm just 3 minutes from my family tobacco farm and 35 minutes from UNC. We are 2 hours or less from the Mountains and the Beach. I would not have an issue living in Southern Va, Upstate SC or on the corner of Eastern TN if I were to move from NC.
