There were so many great qualities about Coach Smith, but who he was as a person and how much he truly cared for each of his players and those around him is what was so special about him and makes many of us feel the way we do about him. He is the reason that we as fans are able to experience the Carolina Family because it is who he was a person and what he stood for that caused this to represent what Carolina basketball is all about. We truly are blessed to have had our lives impacted by Coach Smith and I really believe that having Coach Williams who represents those same ideals and values is making Coach Smith smile up above as he is still with us each and every day as our Heels play the game he cared so much about while representing the University of North Carolina that he loved and put his life into making the best place that he could, which he definitely succeeded at because his impact is with us for the rest of our lives.
I always think of this quote from Coach Williams from the memorial and it gives me chills everytime: “Let’s raise our hand and point and thank him for the assist.”
