Carolina transition game (both ends).
First: transition defense:
This sequence came at a key moment in the first half.
Cat Barber had been doing his best NBA audition, making everything in sight.
The local yahoo-ery is in a frenzy as we are down 23-12 at the Under-12 TO.
Roy then gambles and reinserts Joel Berry who had gone to the bench with 2 phantom fouls
Good move. JB had had about enough of Cat by then. Destroys their break, picks his pocket, converts.
That's a key 4-point swing right there, folks.

Why it worked: Cat had busted out off a long rebound on a missed 3 (Nate, I think).
You can't see it here, but as the PG maintaining floor balance, JB had immediately "sprinted to the hole" as he is taught in transition D and was thus in a position to step up and "stop the ball", which is the first priority.
But there's more: Notice how JB's first 2 teammates back (Nate and Theo) also do exactly as they're taught and "get to the blocks". All these things working together enabled this play. I think you can see here, JB wasn't gonna be satisfied with just stopping the ball or wait for another bogus blocking call --- he was lurking for that one --- popped the ball to his buddy Theo and was already off to the other end.
This play changed the momentum and the feel of the game. In fact IIRC, Cat came back down and forced a shot, and JB snagged the rebound, pitched ahead to Nate who hit Theo for another transition bucket, and this all went down in less than 30 seconds of game time. In other words, instead of being down 25-12, it's now 23-16. Game on.
The irony here is that Berry didn't even get credit for the steal on the official stat sheet. No matter, it's the result that counts. Terrific play by JB on excellent team transition defense.

Second: Secondary Break off made shot: This came at the beginning if the second half.
First couple of minutes of the half are always important. We had scored first, but Barber came right back and scored on Berry on a tough left-hander (Brice was late stepping in at the block). But here is the trademark aspect of Carolina Basketball that drives opposing coaches crazy. In a split second Brice whips the ball in to Berry in full transition mode, and JB decides to turn on the jets and run it right up their backs. Now on first glance, yeah, there is definitely some mano-a-mano goin' on here (arright mfer, take that) but of course there is more to it (see below).

Why it worked:
The key to this is we just don't run back down the floor after a make, we fire out in full Secondary Break configuration. Now, as you watch this again take your eyes off the ball and notice the spacing --- Marcus and Justin have sprinted and "hit the hashmarks" on either side and are available for kick-out 3s, Kennedy has run the floor and is right there as "first trailer" for clean-up or a back-pass, and Brice the in-bounder is maintaining balance as "second trailer" --- in other words, perfect (hell what am I saying, that's a thing of beauty!).
Now all that's left is reading the floor.
Well, JB (always with eyes-up) saw State had covered the blocks but nobody had "sprinted to the hole" --- and that's all he needed to see (and again, there's a little payback going on here) and took off like a Tailback who sees the endzone. By the time one of the twins had stepped in it was too late (And-One, bitch!) and JB finishes thru contact and goes to the line.
And here's what gives other coaches ulcers: from the time the ball went thru the basket on the other end to Berry's finish officially took all of 5 seconds of game time .
That is Carolina Basketball at its best.
BTW: And yeah, I hafta admit I loved seeing Berry bow up just for a second after the finish and Kennedy's 'that's-what-I'm-talkin-about' expression --- and for anyone who doesn't understand just how explosive JB is, just go back and watch him accelerate from the backcourt key to the finish --- dude was a friggin' blur.

Nice breakdown on the transition game! Thanks for posting Gary
Glad to do it. Watching stuff like that fires up the juices --- and also makes me wonder how any Carolina fan could ever want someone coaching a non-Carolina system here.
As I tell my buddies, that was basketball the way God and Dean Smith intended it ;).

I said that play with Berry probably broke their back, and I think everyone was like what and rolled their eyes.

But, that is where NC State went from leading big to falling apart. I think it knocked the wind out of them and turned the game completely.

Dunno if it broke their back but it certainly served notice we weren't going to just let them get just back in it. Barber did have that "well, sh**" look on his face afterward.
