Is Luke Maye the ACC POY favorite?

Bagley was the clear favorite - and deservedly so, he's a monster - but he's already missed 3 ACC games and is almost certainly going to miss more.

Jerome Robinson arguably deserves it most (24.7 points/game on 67.7% TS% is unreal), but BC can't finish over .500, so he may miss out. If it's not Robinson, I have to think it's either Maye or whoever voters decide is UVA's best player. If we win 2 of the next 3, Maye has a great shot.

Dont count out Robinson no matter what BCs record is. Luke gets my vote, but then ...............

I don't think ACC player of the year can go to the best player on one of the league's worst teams. If we beat Syracuse and Duke to close out regular season play, Luke is POY in my opinion with Bagley on the sidelines.

FWIW, Pomeroy lists Luke as #7 on his list for national POY. Bagley is #3. So if Bagley slips because he's out - as Bonzie slipped for that reason - then Luke is in line.

Erick Green won it on a 4-14 VT team. Though that was a weaker year for top players.

Others in the running according to Pomeroy are Carter from Duke, Guy and Hall from Virginia.

That would be a pretty good team (with Bagley and Luke). Could use a true point guard.

Pomeroy has zero to do with ACC POY, as it should be:rolleyes:. As OP said Bagley was likely the favorite but now Luke has a legit chance as next up (and wouldn't that be sumpthin'?).
Your ACC 1st team will likely be Luke, JB, Robinson, Bagley and Battle.

If UVA finishes as the #1 team in the country and wins the ACC by 3+ games (which looks likely), they should and probably would have someone make 1st-Team All-ACC. Hall would be the most appropriate pick, but I could see voters picking Guy just because of volume scoring.

Maye, Bagley, Jerome Robinson, and Hall would make it comfortably for me. The 5th guy is harder to pick - probably Berry, with Reed (Clemson), Farrell (ND), Justin Robinson (VT), and Battle ('Cuse) in contention.

If JB is not on that first team they should just stop doing it.o_O

Kinda depends on how we finish. If we win out (finishing 13-5) and he plays like he has of late, he should definitely make it. If we lose out (finishing 10-8), there's no way we have 2 players on 1st team.

Voters traditionally give more weight to ACC game performance and JB's speaks for itself. He's the face of the league for good reason and he's hands down the best at his position on both ends of the floor. Granted, ACC voters have done some dumb-ass things in the past but leaving Joel Berry off the first team would jump the shark.

If they can only pick one UNC player, it'll be Maye - that's almost guaranteed. In conference play he leads the team in points, rebounds, blocks, and steals (Theo leads in assists).

And if we finish 10-8, they're only going to pick one UNC player. 10-8 teams don't get 40% of 1st team All-ACC. 12-6 or better, then Berry has a great argument.

There's literally no rule on how many they can pick from any team, and you have no idea what they're gonna do. Mike O'Koren was an All-American one season and got left off the ACC 1st team, so they do some dumb things from time to time. Berry's "argument" has spoken as loudly as it needs to. What they do with it remains to be seen.

It's not a rule, but it's almost always going to be true, unless the rest of the roster is awful. Picking 2 guys from a 10-8 team implies that the rest of the team is really bad. If you have 2 of the best 5 players in the conference and a good supporting cast, you're almost certainly gonna finish better than 10-8.

Our bench is weak, but Kenny, Cam, and Theo are quality starters. So if we finish 10-8, Berry and Maye will shoulder some of the blame, pushing both of them down a fair amount - and Maye will get the nod because his stats are better.

I'm not guaranteeing anything, because it's true that I don't know what will happen. But I can read the landscape.

...sorta like the landscape that led you to argue til you were blue in the face that we shouldn't think Kenny would be a strong 3-point threat this season? ;)

Well Bonzie slipped because he was out for the whole season.

Actually, I'm hearing he could return for their last 2 ACC games but still

10-8 is out of the question now, so we can stop beating that horse, but Luke did not help his chances much tonight.

On the one hand, Luke's stats kinda sucked. On the other hand, the win helps the possibility of us passing Duke to finish 2nd in the ACC - so that's nice (and helps Luke's case).

I can't believe we are talking about Luke Maye possibly being the ACC POY. I mean, I absolutely love the fact that it's a real possibility, but I'll admit, I wasn't sure he would ever crack the starting lineup when he committed. The kid has worked his ass off in the weight room and on the court he has really developed his game and taken it to another level. It's amazing what happens when hard work and talent meet up.....

I didn't get to watch the game, but when I looked at the box score I literally thought they swapped Luke and Theos stat line. Luke only shot 8 shots and made 4 of them. Had 3 reb 4 assi and 3 steals. Heck, Theo has been praised all year for that type of game.

I wouldn't say he's the favorite yet, but if Bagley misses the rest of the regular season or comes back for the UNC game only to play poorly and lose, I think it's Luke's. As for Berry, he's having a great year and is among the contenders for first team All-ACC, but there is a lot of competition. I'd say Bagley, Maye, and Robinson are locks for first team. The remaining spots are between Berry, Battle, Hall, and Guy imo. If we finish 2nd, Berry increases his chances of making it. There are just so many teams these days that a lot of guys can make arguments for it. Since the conference went to 15 teams, I don't think any school has had 2 first team choices, at least not the past 3 years.
