Jaelyn Withers & Company

Old man veteran Mando, 25 year old by the start of the season Ryan, a vet RJ. Tons of experience for this day and age, if the athleticism is infused not a bad combo.

I was wondering, too. Looks too tall for Cormac, but that might just be camera angle.
Cormac is listed at 6-5. It sure looks like his face to me.
I like that Jae'Lyn both started and finished the break.
Me too. Everyone on the team will be running hard this year knowing they will be rewarded if they do. Withers, Ingram, et al are going to get a lot of dunk opportunities. Of course, this is predicated on us rebounding the ball well. Roy’s teams were generally ranked top 5 in rebounds, the last two years we were ranked 8th and 6th nationally in total rebounds. Anything approaching that is conducive to an uptempo style, provided you have a PG and you’re of a mind to. We do but who knows?

Should he start? I think so and so does @DSouthr, the last I checked. At one point @andrew jones seemed to favor that, too, but I think his final roster has Cormac at SF and Ingram at PF. How about you?
IMO, Withers and Cormac should both get 25+ MPG, regardless of who starts. Hubert has zero excuses for not playing his bench. ZERO! He has plenty of experienced depth.

I agree. I think it makes more sense to bring Cormac off the bench because he's so savvy and versatile. But Hubert should probably try it both ways. Who knows, it could be one of those "which one should start against this opponent" decisions.

Either way, all 3 - Ingram, Withers, Ryan - should be playing 25+.

BTW, nice avatar.

Yep, I am now and doubt I will be swayed from believing Withers should start at the 4 and Ingram at the 3. Now of course, once games are played, I do think you have to re-access things just to be sure your combinations are working as expected but that should be consistently re-evaluated by all coaches.

I look at the combination of Ingram and Withers almost like a duo where they are both very talented individually, their sum together may be better than the individual parts because their games seem to fit together, I keep coming back to that word "fit". Neither look to dominate the ball, both are very good passers, Ingram is a bit more facilitator while Withers gives you a bit more physical bouncy athletism, I think they will play off each other really nicely while both being able to make solid clean look jumpers out to trey land with good shot selection. On the defensive end they are 2 guys that can easy exchange positions 3 & 4 and are very active, move their feet, + defenders both. I think they as well give us solid rebounding on both ends and can match well in the face of physical play that we were not good with last season. Cadeau's ability to find these guys just takes things up to another level.

I recall Gut took a lot of heat from UNC fans when he had his "we have 6 starters" tact but frankly, I kind of like that approach, more for college that lower levels if you have that kind of talent available. This coming season, when I look at who we have, why wouldn't I take a strong look at the term "starter" being more just who begins the game. I am not just talking about a "6th" man, I am saying factor in who begins the game with how we match up against the next foe, how guys are playing, who may be dinged up and limited, what approach do I want my team to take based on the next opponent.

I don't think being benched as a starter should be a thing and in some cases a kid may be better coming off the bench where he has had a chance to see the tone of the game. Most kids would rather play 20mins off the bench than to play 10mins as a "starter". But you have to manage your bench and you have to play them solid minutes. You should treat those guys coming off your bench like starters but those guys coming off the bench have to act like starters, their heads have to be in the game, they need to be totally plugged in to how their position is being played almost like coaches, don't sit there and chat about what you are going to eat after the game or how cute the coed in the 4th row is.

It really helps to keep a deep bench happy with PT if you ramp up game tempo, having guys flying up and down the court rather than constantly settling in to the half court, you need consistent fresh legs out there to play that strong high pace game. Fresh legs help you defensively, help you getting to loose balls, help you on the boards and all that helps you to get out and run for easy ops. Hubert has mismanaged our bench in BOTH of his 2 seasons as head coach and that has to change, that will change or Hubert will not have this gig long, just real talk.

We have 6 proven starters

RJ
Cormac
Paxson
Harrison
Jae'Lyn
Armando

...only 2 proven at UNC but proven starters none-the-less.

Plus Cadeau, who is almost certainly going to start.

Plus Trimble, who may not have proven himself a starter as a freshman, but has certainly proven he can play at this level.

That's 8 "starters" and 2 question marks: Washington, because of his injury; and High, because he's a freshman.

We could live - and be very good - with that roster if everyone stays healthy. The only real worry is unproven depth up front.

That's assuming, of course, that Hubert can cobble those individuals together as a well-functioning team.

Absolutely.

How you divvy up the minutes matters, too. Eight "starters" divided into 200 minutes means everyone could play 25 minutes! And while the numbers obviously won't come out even, there's hardly any reason for anyone who can carry his weight to get much fewer than 20 mpg.

I'm hoping we get both: Up tempo AND well-distributed PT.

Maximum fun for players and fans.

I’m hopeful for more evenly spread minutes so that we can always have fresh legs in and play aggressive D. Hoping to also see more transition offense off rebounds, buckets and turnovers. I’m excited to see this team play!
