Saw on IC the kid is up to 295lbs...Kid could be very good and we need him to be....

yeah, I like IC's video break-down of him from the spring game too. I went to the spring gm and don't recall him looking dynamite or anything, but that play they review is impressive. I'm guessing he'll be similar to Nazair in Nazair's RS Frosh yr productivity-wise. Probably not ready to be part of an amazing two-deep, but close.

Jalen is quick off the snap, not sure if it is explosiveness or great anticipation of the snap, but his best plays last yr came when he had that split-second advantage, cause otherwise he was a little lanky.

I have to admit when I saw his name on the post my first thoughts were :
1 academically ineligible
2. season ending injury

whew!

yeah, but now that's he's 295, and doesn't turn 19 til August, it is starting to look a little more explainable. Nazair was listed 295 last yr which was his 3rd in the program. So Dalton is already bigger than Nazair a whole yr earlier. Who knows how much bigger he'll get, but if he keeps adding 10 pounds of muscle per year he could be a Jarron Jones type of guy.

Still makes you wonder "what if".

He could still rush from the edge at that weight, due to his height, right? Isn't Julius Peppers a similar (freakish) size?

Julius is listed at 6-7/287. He's a freak athlete though. I agree about Dalten, I had hopes of him becoming a monster DE. Still think he'll be a fine player, regardless of position.

I have zero experience as a DL player or coach, but it's always just seemed to me like the staff would be wasting JD's potential by moving him to DT. Dalton was known in high school for his edge rushing proficiency wasn't he not?

Question - if Dalton is such a natural for DE, why was he playing as the 5th DT instead of Tyler Powell?

One-third thru the yr they decided to play Tyler Powell exclusively at DE instead of DT.

When Crawford went down, Dalton became the 5th DT rotating in, but couldn't they have pushed Tyler Powell to the interior and let Dalton do end, backing up Bart and Jessie Rogers?

We stank at DE just as badly as DT.

For whatever reason, they thought Powell could best help the edge and Dalton could best help the interior as the 5th DT. Powell was DT coming out of spring and summer. Dalton was spit between the two.

Perhaps there is something about Dalton that didn't suit him that well for DE? Or Perhaps there is something about Powell that makes him so much more effective for DE?

I am pretty much the same way. We've had so much bad luck on the DL that it seems normal. I just expect t.

Kind of a shame he couldn't redshirt. So we have 3 more seasons barring injury for Dalton to play. This year it's DT and my guess is next year as well.

But it's possible he could change back to DE his senior year. He'd probably then lose some weight, but Rashad changed positions and did great. Of course, it was a similar position but he had to lose 20 lbs. Dalton might end up at DE before his career is over here, if we have some guys develop at DT.

Just have to wait and see.

For this year it looks like we have Naz Jones and Dalton manning defensive tackle. That ought to be a strength. Then, we have Clarke, Crawford and Dinkins at Nose tackle, right? Still not that comfortable calling it NT but that seems to be the position label. Between those 3 we ought to be good. I am assuming all freshmen redshirt.

So we could be pretty good in the interior D-line. Comes down to the DEs and the LBs then as far as stopping the run, which was our weakness last season.

Will Mickey Bart have a monster senior season?

Will Drennon and Strowbridge step up? Or Powell maybe at DE? And does Malik Carney have it in him to be a quality edge rusher? He used to be a linebacker.

I think Carney was listed at 235 last year. Does anyone know if he has put on more weight, in order to play D-line? I am hoping he is at least 250 by the start of fall camp. Based on the spring game, I think he could be a solid edge rusher.

That would be good. We seem little thin at WDE. If Fox had enrolled early, the way people talk about him suggests he could contribute. But my guess is he'll redshirt.

I wonder if Carter or Fox get any time as true freshman...Carter has the size...

I doubt it. Perhaps had they enrolled early but there's a lot to learn. But who knows? You are right on Cater possibly having the size and build to be ready. But there's a difference between HS and college and it's not just actual weight but total body preparedness.

Thing is if we have injuries, we might need him to play unless someone else like Powell or Dinkins moves over to DE.
