Alabama also benefited from the fact that they had an extra week of rest while Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia had to win Conference Championship games to just qualify for the 4-team playoff field....I agree that Alabama was, and quite obviously is one of the top 4 teams if not the Top team in College Football, but they still benefited greatly by NOT having to play a Conference Championship game whereas the other 3 playoff teams did....Of course, they also had the motivation factor against Clemson along with that extra week to rest and get healthy before their smackdown of the Tigers....
Personally, I think that Conference Championship games should be abolished, and the playoff field expanded to include 8 teams with All 5 Power Conference Champions invited along with the best Group of 5 champ which would have been a Central Florida team this year that beat the team(Auburn) in the Peach Bowl that beat both teams who are playing for the National Title next monday....Love the fact that Central Florida is erecting a National Championship banner as the only undefeated D-1 Football program this year that got shafted by the selection committee...
5 Champs from the Power -5 Schools
1 Champ from the Group of 5 Schools
2 Wildcards
The Committee should NOT be determining whether Conference Champions are worthy of making the playoffs or not IMO, and would be better served in making a decision on which Wildcards should be chosen along with the seeding of the 8 team playoff field....A separate group of ADs from the Group of 5 Conferences should select the best team from those groups of schools to be included in the NEW 8-team playoff that would begin a couple weeks after the regular season...The Selection Committee could determine the seeding, and the present format could be used by using the Cotton,Rose,Orange,Peach,Sugar and Fiesta Bowls to host the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds with the Championship being played at a neutral site....
I enjoy the Bowl season, but many of the stadiums are mostly empty when the bowl games are played with a few exceptions , and a lot of marquee players are choosing to sit out the bowl games nowadays.... Bowl games do serve a purpose for teams that have had a decent season, but aren't good enough to make the playoffs...Bowl games also benefit the communities in which they are held, and does help with more practice time for the players, but their importance has been diminishing for years, and the playoffs has only made them even less relevant....
