He was everywhere Saturday night. 14 tackles, 8 solo and one for a loss. He chased down Miami runners for would be TDs and saved the day. He was the best D guy out on the field and, NO, I'm not his dad or family member.

I agree. Gemmel played a great game.

If you grade defensive performance by the number of tackles, then obviously I'd agree. Gemmel also played more snaps than anyone else on defense and graded out lower than about a dozen other players. He was targeted 9 times, allowing 8 receptions for 73 yards and 6 first downs.

We gotta get him a backup. Did he ever come out of the game?

I'm also not his dad or family. But we need some depth.

If I have to chose a D player of the game, I'd probably go with Fox. It seems like it's been a long time since we've had good play on the DL and he was really good last game.

Not to burst OP’s bubble but Gemmel made lots of tackles much farther away from the LOS than you want a LB making tackles. And as RH notes was abused in pass coverage. He looks to have some nice speed and tackled better than week 1 but our LBs still have a ways to go.

It's very hard to argue against 14 tackles with 8 solo. Just trying to give credit where it is certainly due.
That means he was getting to ball carriers when others on D were not. If he had missed as many tackles as the average LB under Fedora not named Holcomb or Shoettmer, his total would have been 6 or 7, not 14.

Agreed. That’s why I say we need to bring in some quality LBs soon.

I agree....It's hard to say that a kid who is a first time starter who is learning a new defensive scheme didn't have a decent game when he made 14 tackles with 8 of them solo....If he doesn't make those tackles, who else was going to tackle the ball carrier...Not to mention, the game would likely have turned out very different if not for Gemmel...

It's alright to criticize, but the criticism in this case is not warranted IMO!

Will agree that we need more depth, but I love what Bateman is doing with the defense!

Jonathan Smith will be back this week and it will allow us to be 2-deep at both ILB positions.
