Justin Jackson was named North Carolina’s team MVP on Tuesday night, meaning Kennedy Meeks won’t have his No. 3 jersey honored in the Smith Center rafters.

Players and coaches voted for the MVP award, which was announced during the team’s postseason banquet in Chapel Hill. Being the MVP of a national championship team is one way for a player to qualify to have his jersey honored at North Carolina, and Meeks became the fan favorite after his strong play at the Final Four helped the Tar Heels beat Oregon and Gonzaga.

Too bad for Kennedy. He deserves a jersey in the rafters as much as anyone else. Dude was just shy of averaging a double double for the entire season!

It was the teams decision to make. I don't agree with what they did, but that's my problem, not theirs.

Congrats to Justin.

As much as I wished for Meeks to get the honor; there is absolutely no way anyone could argue against JB, JJ, or Meeks!

The amount of support and recognition Meeks got from the Family is an honor as well and something he can point to for the rest of his life.

Our Family was blessed with some awesome ballers who are also awesome people!

I would only have even a slight issue if someone other than those three got it.

I mean are we gonna give everybody a jersey in the rafters? I think it was clear who the back bone for the team was thru conference and tourney play. It was Jackson easily! Meeks was very consistent down the stretch and was an asset to the program. But Meeks isn't jersey in the rafters material from numbers and accomplishments standpoint.

Is it easier for us to win without him or Berry. We seen what the team looked like without Berry. JB is the backbone.
I think when one of your better players is a PG on a Roy Williams team you can make this argument. Take nothing from Berry but it's the key cog to the whole offensive system.

Read elsewhere that Meeks is the only Top Ten Career Rebounder without a Jersey in the Rafters. And he is number 5. All time. Our FGM was 1/2 rebound away from averaging a Double Double over the course of a 40 game season!

In No way shape or form would his jersey in the Rafters cheapen that honor.

When I think Kennedy Meeks I think a good solid productive program guy. I don't think jersey in the rafters. Maybe my expectations are higher than the rest of yall for what should be consider the cream of the crop going in the rafters only at UNC. Or has this recruiting lull lowered some of yalls expectations?

There will always be guys that we fans wish were there who aren't.
For me Hubert, Cota and Butter come to mind.

Doesn't take anything away from how I remember them - just wish for them they were officially honored.

I think he was our most indispensable player. I could make about as good a case for Kennedy, he was our Rock of Gibraltar in the middle all season. But the players and staff have the vote and I respect whatever decision they make.

My feelings exactly. In a program as storied as ours, there are many very, very good players who don't have their jerseys hanging in honor. I'm fine with that because it demonstrates how fortunate I've been to have witnessed so many play their hearts out for UNC. That makes me feel honored.

As noted above, Kennedy is already dead smack in the middle of a group of guys who have already been Honored. He fits just fine. There is another level, Retired jersey, that would be over-reaching, and I do not espouse that level.

Meeks had 1052 career rebounds, 1482 points, 154 blocks and 99 steals.

There were 3 guys who were irreplaceable on this years NC team. Berry, Jackson, and Meeks. Period. Any one of those guys dropped out and we would have been a good team, but not a NCAA Championship level team.

Agree, I'm not in either camp really, I just know we're not National Champions without Meeks so I certainly wouldn't have a problem with hanging his jersey.

Meeks should have been MVP of the FF instead of Berry, which would have given him that honor. Didn't happen though. Team MVP should have been JJ or Berry though. Jackson was our best player and Berry was our most vital. Meeks was right there though and has been for awhile. He has been much better than many give him credit for.

I agree.

The Final Four MVP on a championship team can go the other way, and put a guy up in the rafters that maybe you don't want there. Usually those winning that honor are worthy.... but we could've ended up with Rashad McCants up there if Sean May hadn't had such a huge Final Four.

And Donald Williams had an awesome Final Four.... but is he more deserving of being up in the rafters, vs. guys like Hubert, Cota? Is Harrison Barnes in the rafters?

MVP for the 16-17 season was a "team" award.

Without any of the following we don't cut done the nets: RW and staff, Meeks, Jackson, Berry, Hicks, Pinson, and to some extent Maye, Britt.

McCants was Second-team All-America which is one criteria for jersey honor.

Yes Barnes is up (someone asked) - Second-team All-America, Olympic Gold Medal
