Andrew hammered out a great update on the camp today, from what he saw in person. Here I'm going to break down the recruiting side of things based on who was there, what's happened, and what I've heard.
Let's start with the big stuff. UNC offered New Jersey receiver Kelvin Harmon tonight. The Jersey prospect is already Rivals250 and becoming much more well-known in the recruiting world. I believe he camped at Rutgers recently and isn't shying away from many work opportunities at all. Those I've spoken with have told me he's a hypercompetitive guy that just loves to put himself out there against elite players.
He was far from the only impressive prospect from New Jersey. Three-star receiver Tyree Rodgers of Camden Catholic and three-star Camden H.S. linebacker DyMelle Parker were there, too.
UNC also offered Jordan Riley today. The Class of 2017 defensive lineman from Riverside is a local monster of a prospect, if you go by upside, and he told me tonight that he actually grew up dreaming of playing for the Tar Heels. Yep, sure did. Auburn, NC State and ODU were the first three schools to offer and Riley is really warming again to UNC. He camped in Chapel Hill last year but showed big improvements today.
Tray Scott had Riley working out as both a defensive tackle and end alternately, at different points in the camp. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound prospect has enormous upside and it will be interesting to see where he lands on the line given his youth and how much room he still has to grow.
Jaylen Kelly-Powell, a 2017 safety from Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech, was the other player offered.
Word is local corner Chris Ingram visited and camped today, and he was at Duke the previous day for their 'Saturday Night Lights' camp. He's another kid with major UNC interest. Duke offered recently, joining UNC, Clemson and NC State as the ACC schools that have done so. The more face time he gets with the UNC coaches, the better.
May have been mentioned, but to my knowledge Gene Chizik was not at the camp. Fedora was, and he would talk to the most impressive players after the fact himself.
Two-star defensive tackle Jamari Logan of Virginia has to drop some weight and he admitted that Scott told him as much, but he "fell in love" with UNC, visiting for the first time. The coaches apparently believe he has real potential if he shows the beginnings of that body transformation, and depending on what happens with a couple of other guys higher on the board right now he could be a factor down the road in their plans. Logan really loves UNC and would likely jump on an offer. He will return for a game this fall.
The Deerfield Beach crew was extremely impressive. Four-star uncommitted receiver Cavin Ridley has never been linked to UNC as much as Aaron Robinson or James Pierre, his fellow rising seniors that also camped. That's ironic because Robinson is now committed to Florida and Pierre to Miami.
But here's what's really interesting: It would be foolish to write off Robinson or Pierre. Robinson, the Gator commit, told me that he didn't expect to be so blown away at UNC. And Pierre told me, of the campus, "Oh my gosh." He's going to talk things over with some close to him and I'm not predicting a flip, but I do think he's very seriously considering the Heels. Four-star rising junior Jerry Jeudy was there, and he's one of the nation's best, and another '17 Florida commit was but I haven't heard much from him.
Getting four-star Eastern Alamance rising junior Jonah Melton to put in some time with the coaches so early is very important and a good sign that he's seriously open to staying in state.
Green Hope WR/TE Bryce Dixon has an early offer from Boston College but the local schools seem to be taking their time with him.
I spoke with South Carolina sleeper Jaylan Foster, who visited last year with a friend, and though UNC has not offered I'm pretty sure he's in a respectable position on the Heels' board, and he could conceivably get a closer look down the road. Mostly FCS offers to this point, though. He camped well and they like his hands and routes.
NC State was the first school to offer 2017 running back Tayon Fleet-Davis of Maryland, but he was at UNC on Sunday. No offer to this point, at least to my knowledge, but definitely someone to watch.
Dual-threat QB/ATH Tyler Huntley visited and I don't know much, like what position he worked out at or what the coaches told him. As a '16 guy I have to believe athlete is where he'd need to be looked at to have a real shot.
Speaking of quarterbacks, Stockton McGuire from Georgia was also there.
Class of 2018 corner Derion Kendrick of South Carolina was one of the more heralded very young players in attendance. No offers yet, but I know going into the camp the Tar Heels had a high opinion of him.
