I'm sure many of you have read references to some of this, here or from other sites during this recruiting cycle --- this talk about a "Hybrid-4", which refers to PJ or Knox or Vanderbilt.

Whereas we think of a "Stretch-4" as a tall guy who can hurt ya from 3, the Hybrid-4 is a guy with size who has a total face-up game like a 3 and can play back-to-the-basket as well (not much of a distinction but, still.. modern semantics). Now, while we're not used to that in traditional two-Big lineups, it's really nothing new in the Carolina system. Think George Lynch in Dean's era or Jawad Williams in Roy's --- perfect examples of Hybrid-4s.

Where I'm going with this is here: Look for it this season. I believe Hicks' role will look more like a Hybrid-4 this season than what we saw last year. First, remember he started out playing the 3 as a freshman, and while that didn't go that well, he has a face-up game that he has worked extremely hard on since he's been here. As mentioned before part of the summer scuttlebutt has been Hicks showing out (and more than just his post moves)... and in fact someone I know who participated in some of the pick-up games thinks he's poised to "blow the f*** up!"

This role also seems to be something Roy has adapted to in his long-range plans. He's selling PJ (or Vanderbilt or Knox) on being the successor in that role, and Zion would ideally be next, and I believe this will be attractive to the new wave of "positionless" kids.

Good post Gary.

If Hicks puts together the season we think he can I can't see how recruits can't look at back to back Brice and Hicks' domination and not be impressed (triple negative there, yikes).

I'll add one other thing. It also makes a more seamless transition when we go "small", as when Theo slides to the 4. With the personnel we have returning, obviously you have starters Meeks at the 5 and Hicks at 4. If Meeks is in with Bradley it will look more traditional, but I believe Tony will get the majority of his minutes in the 5 hole. When Luke subs in I believe he will play the Hybrid-4 behind Hicks, which makes sense as well --- Luke has the capability of being a very credible stretch 3-pt threat and mid-range shooter in addition to banging inside, and I think he can give us an effective 10-12 minutes a game this season.

I would love to see Hicks show more of a face up mid range jumper, kinda expected it after his freshman season but really have seen very little of that. Hicks as a wing as a frosh was more trying to get him some PT and his playing his natural position.

I kinda like the swiss army knife way we use some guys now days if the kid is able to pull it off. Some times you just have a kid that is a 0player and no matter what "position" he is in to play he just plays. That is why I tended to not buy Marcus as having to be a PG, I always saw him as a guard and preferred him to hunt his shot more than we typically see from Roy's PGs so I saw him better fitted to the 2. And what do ya know, in the one season he was clearly our 2 guard, he goes in to a monster shooting slump for the regular season? LOL
