UNC has now lost more games before January than any pre-season #1 in 40 years.

That's the kind of negative first that moist expect to come from the football team.

all of college basketball thinking UNC looks real dumb for not going through a legit hiring process to find the next head coach yet gives the keys to a guy who’s never been a major head coach and can’t seem to figure it out.
They aren't dumb. The one(s) that pushed for Hubert's hiring knew exactly what they were doing.

It's bad enough that they only considered UNC guys regardless of qualifications, but then they didn't even pick the most qualified hire from the UNC tree.
Someone(s) high up wanted Hubert. And they knew that there would be zero chance a dude with zero experience would be considered by an external firm. UNC is a good ol' boys club. And Hubert is the "goodest" of good. Hell, at least Duke had the stones to tell fans they were going with K's guy within the same time of the announcement.

I hope Wes turns out to be a legend in the making, because I wouldn't be shocked if they try to give it to a UNC guy with zero real consideration again.

That person high up was Roy. Pretty sure that he got to choose his own successor. And ai think Hubert succeeding him.had been the plan forever. And everybody knows that Roy doesn't go to the bathroom without thinking about how Dean might would do it. All know that Dean wanted a minority HC to lead the program when he left. That was supposed to be Phil, but Phil had his issues that prevented that. So the choice of Hubert was natural for Roy. He was a Carolina guy, and his hiring would fulfill that one wish Dean didn't get to see come true.

He seemed to figure it out last year.

What's upsetting to fans is that he seems to need to figure it out again this year despite 4 returning starters, a top transfer, and a decent recruiting class.

That said, most of us will grumble but put up with slow starts if we reliably end up good later in the season.

Yep, pretty much. I think former players like Shammond, Jawad and others that played cheerleader prior made it even easier, but at the end of the day it's on Roy. I'm almost certain this was the plan since day 1 of his hiring from ESPN. As well as why he never took another job and risked being exposed like McGrath was at UNCW.
I really didn't want to believe we'd be arrogant enough to hand the Lamborghini over to a guy who still needed training wheels. But the signs were there.

I never knew that but that is incredibly discriminatory and near sighted. I applaud DES for breaking some ground back in the day but for a man that prided himself on making his players earn their spots regardless of seniority that is incredibly hypocritical.

I'm sure some very fine people might take this to a full on political place, but I don't think this is the full story.

Dean wanted one of his former players, Roy chose the former player he took under his wing, and the only black coaches we interviewed were from UNC. They didn't just want a Black coach. They wanted a Black coach with a UNC Pedigree first and foremost. You heard it from almost every former player who spoke about it. They wanted it to go to a UNC guy. Not necessarily a black man.

If the primary goal was getting a Black Coach, why did they set the pool so incredibly small? Why not interview a single O.T.F. black coach with a better track record? Why not tap an AfAm NBA asst. coach who had first row seats and coached some of the best basketball talent in the world? Hell why not Steve goddamn Robinson, the guy who served under him longer than anyone?

I know his heart was in the right place, but Roy has unintentionally set Hubert up to fail by doing what he did. And if Hubert doesn't turn it around and fizzles out, people will classify him as an affirmative action, when it's really just plain old nepotism for a guy who waned to coach his alma mater.

That was Dean's plan. But then Phil's issues took that out of play. Now if anybody wants to take it to where I am making some kind of racial statement........knock yourself out. Everything seems to be a racist statement in some form, or fashion, these days. And like millions of others, I have gotten to the point where I could give less of a damn anymore
