I'm so pleased Meeks came back..in my opinion we needed him back more than JJ--I badly want JJ back too--thanks for being a true Tar Heel, Mr Meeks
I honestly feel getting JJ back is our big time key to next season. I say this because I strongly felt our best rotation was with JJ and Theo on the floor together with just one of our big men. You guys saw it, late season and post season, that rotation forged leads and expanded leads. Theo showed us excellent passing and defense, we matched up well with teams that went small to try to isolate our big men out in space. JJ and Theo were able to switch off a lot of those screen assignments stunting the effectiveness with the high screens.
Keep in mind, that was with Theo being a poor jump shooter and Marcus still struggling to make shots and Meeks getting much lower PT as well as Issiah in constant foul trouble. See my point, even with things not working smoothly, the small ball version we played worked really well, imagine those parts not being as broken next season?
Theo will shoot better, this is his first off season to be able to focus in on his shooting and that is his major point of focus this off season. Issiah will reduce the fouls, he is a starter now and he will understand that you have ot stay in the game rather than feel he has to come in and make something happen now, and Tony bradley is waiting in the wings when Brice does pick up foul trouble. I am telling you right now again, Kenny Williams will emerge this coming season as a knock down jump shooter and a lock down defender and may surpass the scoring average Marcus had last season. But replacing marcus is not going to be all on kenny, Nate/7th/Brob will help fill that void. Of course there is the rock solid warrior at the point in the form of Joel Berry.
That brings me to Meeks, I have to believe Meeks will now fully understand that his future rides on how he plays next season. I know Roy has talked to him, now he has NBA input that should serve as the wake up call of wake up calls, it literally is now or never for the big man to show. Now is the time for him to take the same level of dedication and hard work he put in to re-forming his body in to refining his game. Now is the time to work on things like a mad man, to find that next level that is inside waiting to emerge. I say he has to be better, I can't imagine him coming in to next season anything but strongly improved, showing a solid mid range game and playing with passion. It is IMO now or never for the kid, we will see what he is made of.
And if Jackson does return, I can't wait to see his improvement from soph to jr, I am thinking he could be outstanding, I think he can and we may see him take his game to yet another level and while I have no idea how good that can be I do know I want to see it if it happens. I think he has the ability to exceed Tatum (dukie) if he can get a bit stronger physically, I think he already exceeds Tatum as a jump shooter, Tatum finishes at the rim stronger thru contact right now.
ya see, the key to what I saw as our most effective line up is Jackson being able to be on the floor with Theo and that means JJ coming back is vital. With out JJ we have to see if Brob is ready for the wing to either play behind or with Theo. I know the Theo/JJ combination works, I think the Theo/Brob combination can work well to but I have not seen it work, I have seen what Theo and JJ in together can do.
