Is anyone else a little concerned about the kicking game? Weiler is listed as the number one and while he has kicked off well in the past, his accuracy on field goals is lacking. Freeman Jones was a big recruit that we red-shirted last year, but he's not listed in the top two. Unproven dude at punter also. I know we don't need a lot of other things to worry about, but looks like an area of concern.

a "little concerned" doesn't do it justice,

a "little concerned" doesn't do it justice,

Special teams win and lose games, so it definitely is a problem heading into the season....Hard to believe that Jones was a member of the Army All American game, and yet he doesn't seemed to have matured enough to take the job after a redshirt year last season.....Puzzling and Concerning to say the least!

Very, very concerned about FG kicking still. Not as worried about punting because that Daly kid is supposed to good and because, frankly, we don't punt that much between our scoring drives, our 4th down "going-for-it"'s, and the occasional turnover. Also very concerned about punt return blocking. It was horrid last year and led to Switzer not returning any punts for TDs AND to him getting banged up.

Corbin Daly has the skills at punter to be really good. He just needs more experience to become consistent.

I don't think anyone outside the program has seen Freeman Jones attempt a field goal during camp, so it's a little early to freak out IMO. We know Nick Weiler is at least serviceable. He was 5 of 8 last season, with all three misses coming from 30+ yards out. Yes, I know that's not terribly reassuring, but that's also a very small sample size. I think the competition will produce a reasonably reliable kicker, although anything beyond 40 yards may still be an adventure this season.

I have no problem of having Weiler kicking the short FGs. And have Jones trying the longer ones if Weilers leg isn't any stronger. I have heard on here from someone that Jones biggest problem is getting it off quicker. With him trying to do that may be the reason he isn't as accurate as he was in HS.

very sorry to hear f jones isn't in the top 2.
that could mean that he hasn't adapted to the speed of college ball after a redshirt year.
not good.

Freeman Jones suppose to be good also.

The position group breakdown by THI did not include kickers (or special teams at all for that matter) so I guess we will just have to wait and see. I know, everything is wait and see at this point, but I just wanted to know if anyone had any info on how this area was looking with the uscjr game two weeks away.

I would give freeman a shot !! But I'm not the coach. Jones is a stud coming out of bunn. I love the young guys jones and punter Corbin Daly bright future in chapel hill

Why are we afraid of playing freeman ???
Not sure what you mean. Under Fedora, we have barely redshirted anyone. Just off the top of my head, Q. Davis, Howard, Switzer, Powell, Spain, Cohen, Walker, Hood, Logan, Francis have all played as true frosh. And there's plenty I didn't mention. Like I said, very few redshirts.

I just watched the post-practice interview with Coach Fedora and he said they have not made a decision on the place kicker but that Weiler will kick off (no surprise there). It sounded like it was between Nick and Freeman.
