...and with another damned early Monday game, I just got done watching the full replay (thank you, WatchESPN app :D).

- First thing I wrote down in my notes was "flat". We were clearly tired, and we were only hitting energy in spurts. Fortunately it was enough. Luke was clearly the most affected. After his herculean effort Saturday, he had zero legs tonight. He was leaving shots short and was just getting abused in Pick-and-Roll D. Good on him though for fighting thru the fatigue and bringing down 8 rebounds and contributing 4 Assists.

- I continue to be disappointed with the fact we can't trust our young Bigs to simply catch the ball cleanly on entry passes. JB and Theo keep feeding them but eventually they're gonna lose trust. I was probably not the only one here saying "just finish, Theo!" because his passes just weren't being rewarded. But hey, once Theo decided to finish himself he coaxed in some beauties! Nice 16 and 10 double-double as well

- I dunno whether it was fatigue or just a lack of concentration but our over-help bug returned. We tightened it up some in the second half but that needs to be a continued point of emphasis going forward.

- Jeez, what got into that Mooney kid? 6/6 from 3 with that goofy-looking shot. Granted, we encouraged him, but still. Apparently the best cure was putting him on the FT line. It was definitely a stroke of justice after he flopped on a 3 and the sumbitch proceeded to pull the dreaded hat-trick with 3 bricks. Somewhere Sheed was yellin' "Ball don't lie!"

- Speaking of picks, ND was using them generously, and often outside the rules (it took til the 2nd half under-16 to get one called), but they were very successful in hanging in the game by stressing our Help-D with PnR and back-screens. They also did a good job of dictating tempo, but their late shot-clock action eventually caught up with them after Mooney's reign of terror stopped. We forced them into many difficult late drives and were able to key our transition game off the misses.

- Speaking of transition, despite ND's efforts to slow us down, we managed 13 Fast Break and 23 Secondary Break points. That was vital in this win.

- Shout-outs to BRob and Platek for solid minutes. Despite getting caught napping on a quick-trigger 3, Andrew continues to shine on the defensive side and isn't afraid to mix it up in the paint, and Brandon was taking care of the ball. Also, although he still gets lost on offense, 7th came back from injury continuing to play very solid D --- he is night and day better on that end than last season, and we were able to get JB some much-needed blows.

- Kenny still has the look of confidence and 5/7 shooting to show for it. and Cam continues to show an inside-the-arc game. That drive and flush came outta nowhere (with an uncalled foul to boot).

- After a lousy job in South Bend (and early on tonight), we clamped down on the glass for a 42-29 advantage.

- Let's get to something really positive and a show of veteran character. I watched this closely and we had guys taking turns resting on offense so they could maintain defensive intensity. JB and KW were nasty dogs on D and we did a number on their normally high-scoring Guards. We held their three starting perimeter guys to 9, 10 and 3 respectively, and ND to under 38% shooting as a team. Hell, take away the 8/8 from their Bigs and they were 2/21 from 3. In other words, the guys we actually guarded had a rough, rough night!

- Speaking of JB, he busted ass on D and picked his spots on O with 21 timely pts in a variety of finishes. And OMG, he actually got to the line for 3 FTs, although that could've been doubled when he got hacked late on a 3. Fortunately Luke cleaned up the miss. Joel also got his clock cleaned on an uncalled charge later and took a full possession just to get the cobwebs out --- but after we captured an offensive board Dog was right back at the helm. Bilas said it well --- Joel Berry is a champion.

- Finally, I half-joke about us "surviving" games with certain zebras, but with Michael Stephens it's no joke. I'll just say we should probably be glad that Brey pissed off Ayers and the fouls evened out in the second half. Hell, either way, neither team was worth a damn from the line anyway (another sign of fatigue), so it turned out to be a push...

Anyway, this was a win I would take, no matter the margin. 3 ACC wins in 5 days is tough stuff! Now, hopefully the guys can get their bodies healed up and ready for a brutal closing stretch and a big road game Saturday night...

Another good day on the boards, I thought that was really big for us coming into the game. Especially since in our last matchup with Notre Dame we got outrebounded on both ends and from there 20 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second chance points which definitely kept them in that game and put them in a spot to win it. It was definitely a big focus and our guys delivered, 42-29 advantage there and only allowed 6 second chance points from Notre Dame.

Very nice contribution from Theo on that front adding 10 big ones, that's what I love about Theo he knew that we needed help on the glass in order to beat them in that area, so what does he do he grabs 10 of them. While, also being in Aggressive Swiss Army Knife Mode with 16 points and 5 assists adding onto those 10 rebounds (I'm still waiting for that triple double). It is so vital for us to have Theo constantly giving efforts like this and getting everyone involved and it will especially be big down this next stretch to close out the regular season. Nice night from Theo especially stepping up big down the stretch, 11 points during our late run. He is so much better when he is confident and attacking, even dropped in 2 mid range jumpers tonight.

Good solid game from Joel, he has been able to get to the basket and convert a lot more in the last few games. He seems more relaxed and is just being Joel Berry. And did he give Farrell fits all night long, kept him at 9 points on 3/18 shooting and 1/12 from downtown.

Great to see Kenny' s stroke back and more importantly his confidence. 14 points, 3/5 from 3 and a few nice mid-range jumpers today. He’s now had 4 straight games in double figures.

I thought Roy did a nice job of making subs in the 1st half to get our starters some rest and have them good for the end of the second half/crunch time. You gotta give it to our guys on that big 22-6 run at the end of the game to put aside any aches and pains and any hopes of Notre Dame coming back to dust, by giving a great effort and taking things right at Notre Dame. The way we have finished the last 3 games has really showed a lot about our team and our confidence in each other to be able to stay composed and close things out. The ability to do this consistently is only a positive for our chances moving forward.

Awesome last 5 days from our guys, 3 big wins and some great momentum to build on. Things are starting to click and our chemistry on both ends of the floor is improving. Ol’ Roy has been coaching our guys buts off and will continue to, in order to get them where we need to be.
Nobody wants these Heels this year!!

Mooney is shooting a Luke-like 52.6% from three after this game! He has the weirdest hitch in basketball, but dude is a sharpshooter. He's also somehow only 53% from the line. That first miss was the worst free throw I've seen all year that wasn't an airball.

Let me give a little extra love to Seventh. Not only is he much better on the defensive end he also seems to be settling down and playing more under control when he spells JB at the point. Have yet to see him stick his head down and start that flash drive to nowhere he used to do all to often. Looks like he's playing more with his head up and roaming around the perimeter a little more looking for a good passing opportunity but he still looks a bit tentative on the offensive end .. and that could be because Theo has a tendency to run point when JB is off the floor, as well as when he's on the floor. Be nice to see Seventh get more comfortable on offense and use his quickness to attack the rim under control. Either way it's good having him back. jmho

I noticed Seventh seemed to be very much in control, minus a couple of odd fouls. He moved the ball quickly, precisely and when Theo slide up to 1, Seventh slides to the two, he will find his comfort zone there...nice if he could take a pass and suddenly jet to the hoop. Kid is so fast, their guards had a tough time rubbing him off screens and he stayed with them well, IMO. Lots of growth in this bunch, dividends coming! GO HEELS!

You guys are correct --- 7th has slid over when he's in and that is the best plan. Point is just not in his genes. And yes, I would love to see him attack the rim.

Every second of Joel’s interview is awesome, there honestly isn’t anything that he could’ve said better. He hits on everything from constantly improving, his eventual last game at the Smith Center( that’s going to be one special night), leading the team, making adjustments, motivation from coaches, things starting to click, getting back to the Final Four and the guys bonding off the court.
Listening to this makes me very proud of being a Carolina fan and having kids like Joel who represent our program. What Joel said shows that he really grown into and has embodied being the true leader of this team on and off the court which I know Roy is very proud of. With him at the forefront, I am very confident in our chances of making another run.

Nice write-ups guys!

I was so impressed by our character and focus in the second half! ND had chances to take the lead and each time we came up with the rebound or stop. Each time we went to the other end and got a foul or a good shot off. This team still has a lot of growing to do (and there will be painful moments), but I see a steep learning curve and the potential to be a really tough out in the Tourney!

Theo joined an elite group and now we have proof of the impact our eye test already told us! CJ evolving and KW breaking out and JB bringing the pain and LM proving he is POY maaterial and young bigs showing promise and bench providing D and O and.......what is not to like!

Go Tar Heels!

I am in the group that thinks 7th is growing into the role. By next year, barring further setbacks, he will fully grasp the position and could start to just play! Best case scenario is JF being allowed to come back, but I think we have it taken care of with 7th, Jet 2, and Platek if needed! In a pinch, we convert some of the combos. Roy will find 2-3 and this is certain!

OK, so great win to finish off 3 games and 3 wins in 5 days but the pick & roll defense hit us again. What I see there takes an explanation, 2 important terms to understand, hedge and show. Show is more like a fake by our big man (luke often) where he kind of fakes stepping to the ball handler as the pick is set on our chasing guard but immediately peels off with the rolling pick setting big. The hedge our big man actually steps to the ball, soft steps to then peels back or hard steps to the guard and stays with him until our chaser can catch up. Wrinkle I see a lot is teams are double picking our chase guard, forcing him longer to catch the ball handler and our big man having to stay on that ball handler longer as the pick setting big man releases the pick and rolls down. Now Luke tends to hold the hedge a very long time and when he finally does release he tends to turn his head and sprint in to the paint trying to find and get position on the rolling pick setting big man. Either he can get to the spot in time to stop the open pick setter that rolled or the ball handler chasing right behind Luke as his head is turned, effectively using Luke to set an unintentional pick. Now if Luke does not stay with that ball handler initially the guy is open to either drive or shoot because our chase guy can not get to him. Roy teaches hold the hard hedge but our back line defense has to effectively rotate to cover and our lack of experience shows when that doesn't happen and especially if the opponents are setting back screens to hold off the rotation.

The worst situation is getting caught between show and hedge, that is no man's land and that happens to much honestly, Meeks learned to show more than hedge and trust his guards, a lesson that frankly Luke would do well to embrace. WE as well do a lot of switching but switching guards on to defend bigs, especially bigs rolling to the basket is not a great trade off unless it is a long wing like Theo. At times when Luke has held that hard hedge longer we have trapped as the chaser catches up, that has worked at times but we have been burned on that at times also, it leaves someone open every time.

Meeks also learned and we saw it last year to get better positioning on the pick so that he could in part misdirect the ball handler but not lose contact with the pick setter, more shading him to the strong side that releasing the picker, it also allowed our chaser more room to go under and not have our own defender used as a secondary pick the chaser has to clear before getting back to the ball handler.

I just finished listening to the Carolina Insider Pod and Jones reiterated a point that Eric (“Big Grits”) made about Joel’s play as of late in particular being more successful on his drives and converting better as a whole closer to the basket.

It’s a really great point, Eric said that a big reason that Joel is finishing better at the rim is because when he is off the ball he’s coming off an angle instead of straight from the top. This is because when you come off an angle it’s more difficult for defenders to supply help on your drive, so there’s less traffic and help on his drives leading him to be able to get inside more than he was and finish better near the basket.

It’s definitely been shown in the last two games. I know that he wasn’t off the ball the entire game, but I looked at the last few games and against State he went 7-13 from the field and 6-10 inside the arc as he scored 16 points. And last night, he was 8-15 from the field and 6-10 from inside the arc. Once again, having Theo’s versatility where he is able to play as a primary facilitator and being able to move Joel off the ball for spurts definitely is another dynamic that can work for this team as it is getting Joel going which we definitely need to be successful. And Theo is benefiting offensively too as he is able to take his man off the dribble and get into the lane especially on a mismatch which he has been great at exploiting.

I agree that it's not in his genes, and I am terrified about PG situation for next year.
I hadn't intended to use this thread to talk about it, but 7th has had an opportunity to sit with the coaches and absorb, and he's been an attentive student but, bless his heart, as soon as he came in the first time in both games he immediately ran to PG no-man's land on offense (sigh).

The #1 and #1a requirement for a successful Carolina PG is floor command, and while you can get better at it and get coached up to a degree, that skill is absolutely instinctual. You either have it or you don't. 7th unfortunately does not, and next year there won't be a Theo Pinson out there with him.

Baby Jet has the instincts, and will help us, but has limited offensive abilities. Short of Jalek returning (or even if he does), I HOPE Roy sits down with Platek after the season and sez, "son, start learning PG for real". We have plenty of 2s, and Andrew does have the right instincts --- his floor and spacing awareness are quite advanced --- he's smart and and he can shoot. It would certainly help matters for him to be our next Bobby Frasor.

Unlike you gary, i refuse to give up on 7th. Keep watching, think he makes great strides rest of the way. Injury really set him back. jmhho

That would be true, but only to a degree, as he's not coming from off-ball all that often. Yes, sometimes, but mostly he's either facing up and blowing by his PG defender late in the shot clock (when he always has the ball), or attacking in motion just from where he happens to be in the Secondary or Passing game. I respectfully would say the better results have come more from better team movement in that he's not driving into a scrum.

Don't get me wrong, being able to utilize more attack angles is great, but most of that still comes from better team movement and defenders not able to help as much.

I am not even slightly afraid!

AND I'm still expecting some pretty good things THIS year!

Thanks for the SMILE Shun! You are also the definition of the Tar Heel Way!
