Leaky to enroll at Cox Mill High School

Any info on what was rough? The article I saw didn't give any details.

This article from back in Feb sheds some light onto it. It's meant to throw a positive spin on it, but you can read between the lines that it wasn't what he expected it to be.

Part of the issue was RJ Barrett also being on that team and really dominating the ball (as he should).

Monteverde's coach, Kevin Boyle, is also not the easiest guy to play for.

Semi-related: this is a big year for Wendell Moore. After emerging early, his last year or so was relatively underwhelming. But apparently he's been trending up lately.

He has crazy defensive potential at 6'4" with a 6'11" wingspan and a strong frame.

Ugh - I don't like what I'm reading between the lines but he's still a kid so he'll do a lot of growing up in the next year or so.

I can't imagine leaving home at that age and basically starting again with no family around. That is asking for a lot from a kid in my opinion. Sounds like he values family which works for me.

Nothing to see really. He went to the private school/basketball-factory because he felt he needed to experience that sort of environment --- I think he was right, plus he needed a reality check on playing at a higher level and what his eventual role might be (i.e., not PG). Now he wants to be close to family and Chapel Hill for his Sr season. No worries.

I look forward to Rechon being a Heel and if he can work on Wendell a bit...it would be a good thing.

Yeah, I meant nothing negative toward Leaky. It's not for everyone and people get homesick. Hell, Durant was homesick at UT and I think that turned out alright.

Plus, Boyle really is a lot to handle.

I watched a couple of games and all their offense consisted of in those game was isolate Barrett, him dribble around and shoot! Hard for a player like Leaky to do good in that kind of offense

BINGO, and the last couple of vids that I have seen of him are really more conducive of his style it seems. Barrett really touched the ball a whole lot and leaky didn't have near the looks he needed to shine. I love his passing skills, and smooth shot.

Completely off topic, why the insistence on calling him "Leaky"? Has he made indications he prefers this name?

I've seen and heard it in his interviews and He put it on his twitter account for a name, so that is why I use it. LOL, but I couldn't tell you why he's called that.

Also I found "Friends and family call Black, a B student, “Leaky.” His grandmother created the nickname as a play on his middle name, Malik. It helps differentiate Rechon Black from his father, who was a 1,000-point scorer at Concord High. After high school, Chon Black played at UNC Asheville and J.C. Smith. At both stops, Chon Black was teammates with Spiders coach Stowe, who was also a 1,000-point scorer at Concord."

Makes sense. Was wondering if it was a "Mitch vs. Mitchell" thing like with Trubisky.

Just an observation, and I totally don't expect people to change.....but it seems weird for fans to call players nicknames. It just seems lame to me. Some of my friends do it and we joke about it.....so the observation is more light-hearted than critical.

Usually if that's the first name people see them called it usually sticks. It does for me anyways. With the names that are given these days "Leaky" is a lot easier to say than his actual name "Rechon".

I notice he has slipped to #64 on 247. Is that something we should be worried about?

BTW, how tall is he, really?
Why in the world would a 247 ranking make the least bit of difference in worrying about anything? Seriously, all that tells you (if anything) is what observers have already seen, i.e., that Leaky has frankly underachieved somewhat because he had never adopted a mindset of just being a basketball player, as opposed to trying to fit some ill-conceived "role" (as in trying to be a 6'7 PG ).

Early summer reports however indicate the move to Cox Mill is already paying off in that he apparently got tired of being lost in the shuffle at Montverde and is now being more aggressive and assertive and putting the ball in the basket. If he continues to do that --- just play the game the way he's capable of --- Leaky could be Theo's successor as our next Swiss Army Knife.
