Are starting to get IT. By That I mean confidence and simply understanding what they are doing on the court, especially BROOKS. I watched him very closely vs pitt. He is shooting the ball with some confidence .... nice turnaround 10 footer for example and his box score shows ...10 pts 3 rebs 3 steals in 18 minutes. He is still miles away from what he CAN be and what we need, especially defensively and on the boards. Yet he will get there... maybe not this year but certainly next with added strength and experience.

Manley well he played 7 minutes, scored 10 points and was perfect from the FT line. He is a puzzle to me...his " conditioning" is a real concern and I just do not understand why he cannot play more minutes. He can score and rebound and has the length and presence to be a really good player. His off season work with Jonas will pay BIG dividends next season IMO.

I like these young men and if you look closer you can see that Roy can evaluate talent with the best of them . They have the skills, they just need some time, maturity and experience. These two bigs are gonna make us VERY happy in the coming years.

I completely understand the issue with the legs for almost 2 years in high school but a solid amount of time has passed since then. Is it a pain/discomfort thing or a true conditioning thing? I guess I just don’t understand how an 18-19 year old kid doesn’t have better wind at this point.

Yeah Key, I couldn't help but think down the road that Brooks may become a really special player for us, seemed to play with much more emotion for us last night and enjoyed that. Between he and Manley, down the road, maybe by next season, we have a couple of big men that can play at this level and could well develop in to NBA guys.

On Manley, yeah the broken legs for sure effects his current stamina but I think it is as well that he has never really conditioned himself to the extent of being able to play big minutes at this level, think that will be a point of focus this next off season. I really believe that Tony had some of this same issue, reason I felt him coming back in great condition would have benefited him. When Manley does get in to big time condition with stamina, kids looks to me like he can be very special player. I would suggest, had he not had the broken legs and had he been in big time condition to allow him the stamina to play big minutes at this level, he may well have been a 5 star coming out rather than a 3 star but his in season as well as summer league experience was severely limited.

Give Manley a full year, including this summer with Jonas and he will be a force. He may never carry a ton of weight, but another 25-30 pounds will do him a world of good.

I know Manley's conditioning is a concern. It will come. I watch Purdue as well. If no one on has watched them play they might not know about Isaac Haas. He's 7'3" and couldn't stay on the floor freshman and sophomore year due to conditioning. Now granted he's huge. Junior and Senior he's changed especially this year. He could average 30 if PU didn't have 5 guys on the team that averaged 40%+ from 3 point range. 6th guy is at 39%. Manley offensive game is light years ahead of what Haas was as a freshman. I can easily see next year with more offseason conditioning and weights he can easily avg 15. If he actually played pissed off he could average 20/10 next year. He just gets pushed around a little bit too much right now. Part of that could be conditioning too.

Don't count out Huff.

Glad to see someone defending Brooks. I did in another thread.

He's a freshman and needs to bulk up and keep learning the system, but he plays under control and has a decent shooting touch.

I don't know if any of these guys will be true stars, but they should all be good players for us. When they will "get there" is unclear. But all may be decent next year.

Significantly improved next year and a really good 3 man rotation at C/PF in their Junior/Senior years when we'll make another FF run.

I think Purdue could be FF bound this year, they are very good.Wouldn't mind seeing them and UVA play for the title.

Will probably have an all new FF this year.
Villanova, UVA, and Purdue seem the most likely to get there, but at this point, nothing would surprise me.

Pitt is really really REALLY bad.

I'm not taking anything from yesterday.
No matter how bad they are, we hit shots, our bigs handeled the ball well, and that makes a difference no matter who we play. Lot of positives to work with, and how about Luke's free throw shooting? Or is other teams free throw defense better than Pitts?

Said it before, if Manley can continue to recover from his previous physical setbacks he will be a major force in this league, probably as soon as next season.

Pro scouts took notice of him during the PK tourney for a reason.

I was thinking the same thing. Any Top 200 team in the country would blow pitt out on their home court. If we leave the 3pt line open against dook we may lose by 40 at home.

In his press conference Roy did say he would play Garrison and Sterling more. That it was time for them to grow up by getting more floor time. I agree. The rational being guys can guard the perimeter if the bigs cover inside. Not as much help D by sliding guards low, we did it some yesterday but overall the bigs guarded their guy without help.

Gonna need some help from Sterling come Thursday night ... either that or give Bag 40 and let Gayson and company have their open threes .. which may not be a idea .. all things considered. jmho

Maybe, but damned if they don't lay an egg March after March. Sumbitches have messed up my bracket more than once.
I reckon the UVA "style" is not conducive to tournament play, especially with referees from different conferences working the games.

Yep. Manley is very talented. You can't teach the feel and touch he has around the basket. Very skilled back to the basket game. He just needs his conditioning to improve, and more strength. I am surprised some people are questioning why consecutive broken legs can hinder a 6'10 body for an extended period.

This.
I'm a swimming coach and, as a rule of thumb, we say you need 2 weeks in the water to get back every week missed.
Of course, it'll be different for every sport but missing extended periods of court time, especially in his late teens would mean there's plenty more work to do for Sterling. I'd say the player we see next season will be much better, with potential for continued improvement through to his Junior and Senior years.

If he improves marginally he is a late 1st round pick scouts like Manley despite what Seth Greenburg says about us not having any pros (rolling my eyes)

Agree. UVA gets in the tourney every year and then refs from other leagues start calling them For the holds, bumps and grabs that are staples of their defense which prevent free movement.

So out of curiosity, I looked at their last 3 tourney losses..

2017: 65-39 loss to UF 2nd round. Fouls UVA 17 UF 10. FT: FL 18 UVA 7

2016: 68-62 loss to Cuse Elite 8. Fouls UVA 16 Cuse 15. FT: UVA 12 Cuse 25

2015: 60-54 loss to Mich St 2nd round. Fouls UVA 18 Mich St 19. FT: Mich St 33 UVA 26

So I dunno man. The last two FT discrepancies are due to late game fouling by UVA since they were losing. That also jumped up their foul total.

I guess last year it holds true, but the other two years, ehhhh.

I hear you guys on Pitt but Terrell Brown looked like he has a ton of potential. Like maybe the most of any frosh in the building at least for that one game.

Dadika, I noticed it big time last year but I think overall the sentiment is still true. When they lose, it’s because the officials didn’t allow them to play their brand of defense. They are talented enough to adjust and be competitive, however, they aren’t good enough offensively to overcome it.

I won't argue that. Good point in their margin for error on defense is so small because they just aren't usually a high level offensive team.

I agree that the cards look much more favorable for them this year to advance far given the lack of a true elite team in college with good guards and a good big. However, UVA success happens only when they hold other teams below 60 which happens often but i just don’t see them doing that to everybody they play in the tournament. They will run into a tough matchup or a team that can shoot it well and it spells trouble for them because of their offensive abilities which aren’t awful but aren’t all that great either.

Add EJ as a soph to that rotation. That's what EJ should be thinking about. Win a championship ring in your 2nd year and be a lottery pick. Lots better than being a marginal 1st-rounder as a frosh.
