I got admit it was funny hearing all the crap coming from IU fans this week. I just let them talk all week. Not sure how many times I heard how it was going to be 84 all over again. Or Another one was Bryant was going to shut down Johnson. I received numerous texts last night saying how UNC was playing out their ass. I had to remind them Paige used to do this the previous 3 years. You don't break UNC's all-time 3pt record without being able to shoot the ball. We said it before but we were hoping Paige would pull a Donald Williams, he was due. Too bad Hicks couldn't play last night or UNC would have won by more.

Knew MP was going to show up! People finding him knocking down some 3's in a row shocking...don't know college basketball!

It's just like the IU fans making fun of MP for probably, "never opening a textbook." LMAO! You can find a better example than the 2-two All-Academic player that is double majoring hahahaha! Just listen to the kid speak and you know he's got a bright future whether or not he's in the NBA.

Congrats on your courage behind enemy lines. Many IU fans convinced themselves they could play our game. Fool's gold.

Seems back in 1977 there was this legendary juggernaut called the "Runnin' Rebels" who averaged about 103 PPG (before the shot-clock or 3-pointer) featuring future NBAers Eddie Owens, Reggie Theus and Glenn Gondrazik. All the know-it-all pundits predicted a UNC Final Four demise. Ah, but to the Heels that was merely throwing us into our proverbial briar-patch. Run with the Heels? Run with Phil F***ing Ford? Seriously?... I believe the proper response was "Bwah Ha Ha"...

hope you are wearing some Carolina garb around this weekend. THAT will surely tick them off

rebels were going to run us out of the gym. wasn't close.

We won by one, it was very close. We were up 3 actually & UNLV scored a controversial bucket after the buzzer but it counted to make the margin 1. I remember hearing some conspiracy theory notions at the time about that basket being counted to cover the spread or something. I didn't care about that, just that we won & were going to be playing for a title. I think the final was 84-83 but not 100% sure.

Yep. It was 84-83 final --- but got closer on a bucket that shouldn't have counted (but then Marquette got past UNCC on a shot that NEVER would have counted with today's replay reviews --- shouldn't have counted that day.

Vegas was for real and certainly healthier. Phil was playing on one good leg and a bad shooting elbow, Walter Davis went 7/7 despite broken fingers on his shooting hand, and of course the great Tommy LaGarde was done for the season. The saving grace was that they were certainly gonna try to run with a Dean Smith team. Bad idea. Freshman Mike O'Koren went for 31 with many of those in transition.

Similarly, in 1988, we were to play Loyola Marymount in the second round of the NCAA. They were the leading scoring team in the nation coached by Paul Westhead. Folks said we had to slow it down and we couldn't run with them. We won 123 to 97 and it wasn't that close, IIRC. And people still think Dean Smith could only coach a slow down style of basketball.

I remember that one well. Like taking candy from a baby.

It really is funny how long it took people to figure out that the Secondary Break was our bread & butter.

LMU was like UNLV on Red Bull. They had zero discipline and jacked up shots from anywhere and everywhere. Tark ran a more solid system.

Folks should also remember what a gauntlet we had to run in 77. Hell, we had to beat Notre Dame's thugs (Laimbeer, et al) on friggin' St. Patrick's Day.

Wasn't that game also near (on) ND's campus? I can't remember exactly but that's what I recall.

Old timer thread. Haha, just kidding. I find it so cool hearing about the teams back then and the games.
