This is for my friend @ Ozheelfan, another Luke Maye thread.

Above are 2 articles that are connected, both talk about Luke's impact on the offensive end both with and without the ball on the perimeter and in the post. We have talked a good amount about how Luke has moved very well without the ball in his hands and his play here also shows his impact in being able to space the defense out creating more opportunities for our team as a whole to attack.

Some of my takeaways:

I know it probably is obvious that since Luke has the ability to stretch the floor with his outside shooting defenders will be out on the perimeter defending him more, however I thought it was interesting to see how much space was created.

Right away this made me think of two players, one being Cam Johnson and how he can easily fill the open spaces especially the one created on the foul line. What he needs to do is look at tape of Justin Jackson who was a magician moving without the ball in his hands and finding so many holes to attack, since Cam is a very good catch and shoot scorer. The second is Kenny Williams, Kenny definitely has the ability to fill these gaps in turn creating even more opportunities for himself, as he can take the ball to the rack too.

Secondly, Luke's ability to put the ball on the floor and also to pass is going to allow us to get a lot of open shots. By producing like he is, he will force teams to supply help defense on him allowing him to find one of our guys for an open 3 or easy bucket at the rim. So, Luke's impact is not just his ability to knock down shots, it's his ability to create space causing defenders to pay extra attention to him and making us in turn a tougher team to defend, especially when our guys are knocking in shots and getting theres at the rim. I think Luke's play will start to impact Joel more and more as he starts to see what the defense is giving them, he will find more holes to attack and get his, also he'll be able to hit some spot up threes.

My favorite play in there is against Arkansas when Luke is able to get past his man and take it all the way to the rack for two. Also, the play off the break where he takes a few extra dribbles causing Kenny's defender to collapse on him leading him to pass to K3nny for an open 3. And you saw him do this again vs Michigan with a simple ball fake allowing him to get past his defender and dump it off to Garrison for the dunk.

Let me know what you guys think. I think it is really interesting to see how much spacing Luke creates- giving us a lot more ways to attack the defense, this is something that I am definitely going to pay attention to next game because I also think it will be important in our success moving forward.
Ending thought- Luke Maye is a matchup nightmare and a new nickname for thought, The Spacemaster!!

Thanks for the fascinating articles and break down. Maye is a player that is hard to define. His impact is often subtle. Now I'll see more when I watch. Remember all the angst about how bad we would be if we had to rely on Bird?

Just re-read the articles and, as much credit goes to Luke, there should be equal kudos handed out to Roy. Both articles highlight changes to the playing style and game plan in order to accomodate the specific skill set of a key player.

He’s not “set in his ways” the old man can flat out COACH!!! It would be great to see Roy get due recognition for this.
